A 4 foot diameter by 2 foot wide overhang broke off, crushing the supporting timber. Several tons of loose material also caved. The mine is still open, but access is currently limited until Ashington Mining Compay directs GMRV on how to proceed.
The Kelly Mine was dug in the late 1800's under the direction of Mr. John Kelly in an attempt to connect to the Whipperwill Gold Vein. GMRV permitted and reopenned the mine in 1996. A 2 foot wide high-grade silver/copper vein (named the Kelly Vein) was discovered. The Kelly Vein runs up 40 opt silver, 3% copper, 1.5% antimony, and 2.5% zirconium. The original adit extends 100 feet past the Kelly Vein in an attempt to intersect the Whipperwill Gold Vein. The drift stopped short though in a Belmont Porphyry Dike. Old mine maps produced after Mr. Kelly worked the Kelly Mine shows the Whipperwill Gold Vein some 20 feet or so on the other side of the dike. This area of the vein is presently untested. While a quartz vein is exposed in several cat cuts 30 feet north of the dike that runs gold and silver values, it has not explored at depth.
