Mauritius was the fifth country to issue postage stamps.
On 21st September 1847 two values were issued, 1d. and 2d.  They were inscribed Post Office and only 500 copies of each were issued. Of these 15 of the 1d. value are believed to exist today as are 12 of the 2d. value.  These numbers include two unused of the 1d. value and four of the 2d. stamp.
The "Bordeaux Cover" is one of the worlds most valuable philatelic items as it is the only known example of both stamps existing on one cover.   The letter was posted to a wine merchant in that French town.  It is now back on the island having been purchased by local businessmen.
The next issue of stamps were inscribed Post Paid.
I also show the main Post Office in Port Louis and Jenny posting cards in the collection box there.  The box still bears the Crown and the initials GR.
