We went for our first holiday to this island at the end of February 2002 and have made four  subsequent visits. We go again in November 2005.
The sea can be like a mill pond or rough if there are cyclones.  We have experienced one.  All have been off Madagascar.
We enjoyed our visits to the botanical gardens. The Victoria amazonica lily pond is superb.
We had  trips to Port Louis, the capital.  The colourful market was an experience in itself. There is much trading  conducted in the streets near the centre of the city and as shown on photo below it was impossible to walk on the pavemant..  Everyone offered us "very special prices" because they liked us!
Queen Victoria looks very stern compared to Jenny who is relaxed.
We had a trip to the southwest of the island and liked the Chamarel Falls which drop 272 feet.
We had been advised to watch out for uncontrolled dogs.  The dog shown was my favourite of the many wandering around the hotel.  I would have liked to bring him home but did not feel he would settle but want to roam. Two years after we first saw him he is still around and is top dog getting first pickings.
The Hindu people are the majority race and account for 51% of the population.  At the time of a visit they held their Maha Shivaratree  Festival at Grand Basin.  The pilgrims go there to pray for the deity Shiva.  It is the largest Hindu festival outside India.  In 1972 water from the Ganges was ceremonially poured into the lake.  Popular mythology has it that the lake and the Ganges are linked by underground springs.
Photos are shown on a separate page as are photos of Post Office stamps.
We travelled around the island and enjoyed Cap Malheureux and show a photo of the church.  Best beach visited was at Flic en Flac shown below.
We were invited to join some people, and their children, for their picnic which we enjoyed..
Lastly two pictures taken whilst travelling around.  A building site with sticks for scaffold, and a shop.
