"Appleseed - Limited Edition"
To be honest, I'm always dubious when I see a remake of something. Especially with anime. Nine times out of ten, it's inferior to the original, with a different production team, and nothing of the feel of the manga, either. Just another attempt to make some money, and sell product.
So I was totally dubious when I spotted the "remake" of Appleseed in the dvd store, and still dubious, and muttering to myself when it went into the dvd player. Then the muttering stopped, my jaw dropped to the floor, and I suddenly saw Shirow's vision of the wasteland battle at the beginning of Appleseed Book 1 brought to life in gorgeous, fluid, CG.
My my. Then it just got better. I'm still unsure of CG in anime, in the main.. but this is beautiful.. it totally trounced Macross Zero, which was my previous review. I mean this film just oozes quality everywhere. The scope is up there with Ghost in the Shell. It's so superior to the original, and so closer to the manga, that it's not funny. I'm so glad they did the remake, and Appleseed has finally received the treatment it deserves, and can be appreciated as a masterpiece.. because that's what the Manga is, and the original anime wasn't.
I've written too much.. but I can't praise it more highly, or recommend it more. Find it now.. I'm just wondering what's gonna come my way next, cos these reviews just get better and better, and anime just gets sicker and sicker.
