I have a Yahoo! radio station. Listen to the stuff I love...
Hotbox/Commix "Black Queen/Five Reasons (Syncopix RMX)" - Brand Nu. I'm only checking the B Side here, the Syncopix remix of "Five Reasons". A smooth intro builds into a nicely rolling drop, with deep sub bass and some really nice FX. As it progresses, some tougher synth work comes in. An excellent tune to toughen up a liquid set, or to calm things down in the midst of a techstep set. Works well either way, and the production is excellent. Listen/Buy.
Wickaman & Hoodlum ft. Topcat "H2O/Pitch Shift VIP" - Infrared. Dubbed out skank brought bang up to date by this production duo. The vocals aren't overworked for a change, and ride over a really deep roll full of vibes. Very nicely put together, this track has a lot of versatility. Listen/Buy.
Marky & XRS vs Roy Ayers "Mystic Voyage RMX" - Bbe Records. As you'd expect, extremely jazzy, very soulful, and shuffles along nicely. This is pure liquid style, but in my opinion the lyrical potential could have been made more of, and there could have perhaps been less instrumentation, as it doesn't go anywhere for a long time. Listen/Buy.
Big Bud "Source of Inspiration/Tears" - Paradox Music (promo). I can't stress enough, how much better Big Bud have been since they left the Good Looking stable, and this track is just more evidence of that. It's a really blissful tune, with some beautifully deep watery basslines rolling underneath dubbed out FX. Conrad's dulcet tones even make an appearance. Get it. Listen/Buy.
Future Prophecies "Raw EP" - Outbreak. These days I just get more excited than a kid at the candy store, whenever I see something come from the dungeons of Outbreak. These guys have had a busy year so far, and this new EP just shows off why they're in demand right now. The ODB sample on the first track, "Raw" sits over a crisp, cutting tech break. It charges nicely, and the amusingly titled "My Precious Bassline" is probably better than the A Side. Check the Gollum sample!! Listen/Buy.
Matrix vs Futurebound "Strength 2 Strength/Crystal Maze" - Viper/Metro. I expected something a bit darker, but what I got was a pure dancefloor tune, that will have widespread appeal. Nicely produced, you could use this in almost any set. The old skool samples are worked really well. This track is just packed full of atmosphere. The break isn't anything new, though. Listen/Buy
"Last of a Dying Breed EP" - Architecture Recordings (promo). This is the one the tech heads have been waiting for, and I just shot straight to the C Side for Stranjah & Gremlinz "The Nasty". The intro is like a 1950s Sci-Fi B movie, with staggered offbeat cuts that take you into the drop. When it gets there, the build is gradual, it doesn't slam you in the face, so keeps it's flexibility. Listen/Buy.
Technical Itch Presents "The Remix EP" - Technical Itch. I absolutely love Tech Itch, and this EP puts together some fine remixes. The one for me is the A Side remix of "The Legend" by Evol Intent. As you'd expect, they bounce it in true Evol style, with a charging, scattered break being complemented by some truly demented synth work. Wicked. Listen/Buy.
The White Stripes "My Doorbell/Blue Orchid (High Contrast RMX)" - XL Recordings. The remix on the B Side is really well worked. The vocal fits the break nicely, and drops into a classic Contrast style break, although actually the snares were a little tougher than I expected. It's a good track, but didn't really cover any new ground. Listen/Buy.
Kano "Nite Nite/Nobody Don't Dance/Reload It (High Contrast RMX)" - 679 Recordings. More remix work by High Contrast sits on the B Side, and I really find the vocal hilarious. Maybe it's just me, but the break is ok. For me, it's more of a novelty tune than anything, the vocal means I can't take the rest of the tune seriously. Listen/Buy
