The wonderful astronomical observatory of the Ming emperors tucked away in a corner of the old city walls. The naked-eye instruments are masterpieces of design. The Jesuit priest Matteo Ricci played a large role in establishing a modern (for the time) observatory in the 1600s. The museum associated with the observatory has evidence of the exceptional achievements of the ancient Chinese in astronomy. |
Some more photos from Beijing's wealth of cultural treasures. |
