| Francis Marion and Melissa (Graves Brassfield) Graves were the parents of Lucinda Emily. They were married Dec. 5, 1849. Francis was named after Francis Marion, "The Swamp Fox", a general under George Washington. Apparently, Melissa's maiden name was Graves. She first married James Henderson Brassfield in 1841, and had 4 sons by that marriage. Graves married Fannie Cochran, who was born May 1, 1826, after the death of Melissa, on January 7, 1874. He later married Florence Denton on May 30, 1892. |

Francis Marion Graves: Born- May 1, 1826- Surrey County, North Carolina Married- Melissa Brassfield- December 5, 1849 Married- Fannie Cochran-January 7, 1874 Married- Florence Denton- May 30, 1892 Baptized- M.E. Church-Washington, Indiana-May 29, 1899 Died- June 17, 1899-Washington, Indiana Buried- Old City Cemetary- Remains exhumed and moved to Oak Grove at a later date. Location unknown. Melissa (Graves Brassfield) Graves: Born- March 2, 1825- Ohio Died- October 25, 1872- Washington, Indiana This was the second marriage for Melissa, she was previously married to James Henderson Brassfield, and had 4 sons. James Houston Brassfield, b. 4 Oct. 1842, d. 1896 (Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co., Ill.), (2) William Riley Brassfield, b. 5 June 1846, d. 28 July 1920, (3) Perry H. Brassfield, b.c. 1847 (Ill. or Ind.), listed in a home for the retarded in the 1880 census. Also Aaron Brassfield. Further information on him has not been obtained as yet, although we have a picture of him. (See obituary of Edgar Brassfield, son of William Riley). | William B. Graves and Elizabeth (?) were Francis Marion Graves parents. They may have both been born in Elizabeth Co., NC. Peter Graves is believed to be William's father. From what the records show, the family was still in North Carolina when Nancy was born in 1840. Sometime within that time and 1849, the family moved to Indiana, and William died. After the death of William, Elizabeth married Stephen Riddle, May 31, 1849, in Monroe County, Indiana. Whether William ever lived in Indiana, or died in North Carolina, is unknown to us at this time. |

Graves, b. 23 May 1831, m. Mary A. Walker, 25 Oct. 1856, d. 9 April 1910. Alex Walker Graves, b. 1833, m. Stacy Ann Stone, d. before 1867. Elijah Thompson Graves, b. 6 Oct. 1838 (N.C.). He was "farmed out" by his mother in Jan. 1847 in Monroe Co., Ind., although he was listed with her in the 1850 census for Center Twp., Greene Co., Ind. An agreement dated 7 Jan. 1847 is recorded in book J, Monroe Co., Ind., stating that Elijah would stay with John Law (or Lowe) and work with him until he was 21. Nancy J. Graves, b. 17 July 1840, in NC, m. Alexander M. Tilley, 20 Sept. 1855, d. 29 March 1911. |
