RATS!?!? Yup, and lots of them |
This is Gizmo, my very first guinea pig. She died after having major surgery to remove overian cysts. She just kind of gave up with all the pain, despite my best efforts. She was 5 years old. Gizmo is, to this day, the most beautiful guinea pig I have ever seen. She was my love. It was very hard to go on after I lost her, but the other guinea pigs refused to let me stay in bed and demanded their veggies. 9/18/2001 |
This is Castor. He was a gift to me from a friend. Castor had respiratory issues from the very beginning. Numerous trips to the vet, even more numerous medicating, holistic care coupled with veterinary care....none of it worked. He finally gave up one night after about 2 months of struggle. I must say that it was hard to watch him go, but he was in pain for so long that I knew it would be okay to let him go. He was only about 6 months old. 10/25/2001 |
Bridgette was my very first rabbit. Her death was because of my ignorance. I thought I knew enough to take care of a rabbit, but soon learned that I had no clue what I was doing. My only excuse is that I was only 12 years old...but that still isn't a good enough excuse for me. She was a little over a year old when she died. Her death made me read every rabbit book I could get my hands on, and I found out that she died of a hairball. |
This is my Baby Jenks. She was the next rabbit that I brought home a number of years after Bridgette. Despite giving her regular petromalt, papaya chunks, and grooming (even to the point of keeping her hair short), Jenks did end up with a hair ball. However, after a year of treating her for this, she was given a clean bill of health by the vet the day before she suddenly died. The vet said later that he believed she had birth defects that led to a heart attack at a very early age. |
Copper, my little copper colored netherland dwarf. He was 4 years old when I brought him home. He had been dumped off because he was no longer of interest to a 4-H student. So I brought him home. He finally died of wry neck even after being given immediate antibiotic and steroid treatments. I had him put to sleep because he could no longer stand. It was one of the hardest moments of my life, but it was what was best for Copper. He is resting peacefully now. |
Sky Hawk, our family golden retriever. Sky had to be put to sleep once the cancer caused internal bleeding at the age of 14. My parents recieved him as a gift from my grandfather when I was 2 years old. He was always there. I think I took advantage of his presence, but I always loved him. He had a full, long life. Yes, that is me in the picture on the right. |
Streaker is the marmalade on the left and Toby is the black alley cat on the right. Both cats were around long before I was born. Streaker died at the age of 17 when I was 8 years old, and Toby died at 16 when I was about 15. Toby was truely my brother's cat and he fought diabetes for 4 years before his body finally gave out. Toby weighed a wopping 20 pounds of solid muscle in his prime and was able to take down jack rabbits at will. |
Smoky was my first cat. She is the one in the back, her two kittens are in the front. Smoky wandered in after a horrible blizzard in 1990 and we ended up keeping her, and the two kittens. I know that Smoky died of kidney and liver failure, but I don't know how old she was or what caused this. She died when I was 12. |
Hidy was my very first rat. She was given to me by my parents on my 8th birthday. My brother was given another female rat that he named Jinia who was Hidy's cagemate. Jinia died two days before I left for science camp in 6th grade, and Hidy died the day after I got back....Jinia dying of a chronic respiratory disorder, and Hidy, simply of old age. I loved them both. |
Cocoa was my very last rat. She was my very last female rat so I gave her to a friend of mine who had a couple other females. It has been years, so I am sure that she is gone by now. What a character. |

This is Brody. He was attacked by Zowie the Friday before Christmas of 2001. He lived through the attack but never came back to his full self. He finally stopped eating altogether. I syringe fed him day and night, every two hours, for nearly 9 days before a respiratory infection killed him within a period of 24 hours. I miss Brody. He was my first chin. He used to sit on the couch with me and watch tv. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him and his cage mate, Mowgli. His death will always be my fault because I left his cage door open. I will never forgive myself. I'm sorry Brody. I would give anything to bring you back. 1/16/2002 |

Sunny was killed by a raccoon when I was moving to Jackson from Sacramento. I loved Sunny very much and went into hysterical sobbing when I found her with the flashlight. There wasn't much left of her. But Sunny lives on in my heart as the most robust, live-enjoying duck I have ever met. To keep poor Petri company, I added Honeysuckle and Jasmine to the herd. |

This is Madeleine. I had Maddy for six years before finding her dead in her cage one afternoon. I payed $400 to have her leg amputated because it was severely damaged when I got her. I have been lucky to have a lot of wonderful pets in my time, but Madeleine was really special. I will never forget her. |
