Joseph Taylor Baird was born on February 27, 1975, at 10:10 am.  He was born at what was then the Bernalillo County Medical Center, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  One of identical twin boys born to William Charles Baird and Barbara Evelyn Wimberly Baird.  He was very small at only 3 lbs. 4 ozs.  Because I had gestational diabetes, he was born two months early.  The twins were actually due to be born on April 30, 1975.
I had been told before the twins were born that they would probably not make it through the first night even if they survived the delivery.  My answer to the doctors was "These babies belong to God, and only He can say whether or not they will make it."  I had been in the hospital for 3 weeks already to prevent early delivery.  The medical staff had done everything humanly possible to prolong my pregnancy, and to no avail.  I was about to deliver at seven months.

Joseph was born first.  He was immediately examined by the doctors, who found him to be in good health, except for being so small (3 lbs 4 ozs).  Three minutes later, his identical twin brother, Jacob was born.  Both babies were rushed to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.  Joseph was given a more thorough examination and placed in an incubator,with oxygen being pumped in.  Jacob was not breathing, so was put on a resperator.  Jacob was the more critically ill baby at that time.

Joseph did fine through his first night and into the next day.  During the following day, he began to show signs of illness.  Upon examination, he was found to have an intestinal infection common in premature babies, because the internal organs are not fully developed.  Joseph was administered antibiotics and seemed to come out of the illness.  Now all he had to do was gain weight.

At two months of age, the twins each weighed 5 lbs,and were ready to come home.  Joseph had been home about a week when he began to not be able to hold his formula down.  I took him back to the hospital.  His formula was changed and he did fine for a few days.  Then he began to get sick again.  After three weeks of this up and down cycle, he was re-admitted to the hospital.  This time more thorough examinations were done.  It was found that he had a blockage in his intestines caused from the intestinal infection he had during the first week of life.  He was very weak, but the doctor did not feel that the surgery could be postponed.  He was operated on for the first time on June 13, 1975.

He was not getting well.  His lung collapsed.  Chest tubes were put in to allow his lungs to inflate.

He still was not getting better.  Another surgery was performed on June 20, 1975, when it was discovered that the first surgery had come undone.  He never recovered from the second surgery.  He developed a brain hemorage.

Joseph died and went to be with Jesus on June 23,1975.

I'll lend you, for a little time, a child of mine, He said
For you to love the while he lives, and mourn for when he's gone;
It may be six or seven years --- or twenty-two or three ---
But will you, 'til I call him back, take care of him for Me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief
You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from Earth return;
But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.

I've looked the wide world over in My search for teachers true,
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain ---
Nor hate Me when I come to call to take him back again?

I fancied that I heard them say:  Dear Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run;
We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may.
But should the angels call for him much sooner than we'd planned,
We'll bear the bitter grief that comes --- and try to understand.
