Martha Ellen Baird January 5, 1971 |
Martha was born January 5, 1971 at the Bernalillo County Medical Center (now the University of New Mexico Hospital), in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. She was the first child of William Charles Baird and Barbara Evelyn Wimberly Baird. Martha has always been "in tune" with God. She became a Christian at age 4, which is very young. She always did what was right even when it was not the popular thing to do. Martha has had her trials during her life. When she was 11 years old, she complained of back pain. At first I thought it was just a minor thing, like a sprain or something of that nature. But when she came home from her girlfriend's house because her back hurt too bad to play, I knew something was wrong. I took her to the doctor, who took x-rays. He saw a shadow that appeared to be around the area of her intestines. He tried treating her for constipation to see if it was that simple. When the pain did not go away, our doctor referred us a specialist. We lived in DeKalb, Illinois and at that time the town had two Orthopedists. I cannot even remember the name of the doctor we saw. He was an older man with many years of experience. He checked Martha, talked to us a few minutes, then he took a look at the x-rays. His face literally turned white. The x-rays revealed that a part of Martha's spine was missing. He said that he was not qualified to treat this. Because of the look on his face and this statement, we asked what it was. He told us that it looked like cancer to him. He called Chicago to a spinal specialist and set up an appointment and hospital admission for that Sunday. (It was Friday) We drove in to Chicago the next morning to admit Martha into the hospital. Through all of this, Martha had such a peace about her. At the hospital they ran test after test. The doctor told us that it was either cancer of the spine or leukemia. He would need to do a biopsy to be sure which it was. We told Martha what the doctor had said. But it did not worry her. We decided that the best thing we could do for Martha, was to go on home, so that we could go to church that night. Just before we left, the anesthesiologist took us into the hallway. He asked if Martha knew what was going on. I asked "Do you mean, does she know that this could take her life?" He said, "Well, yes". I said "Yes, she does know and she is not afraid, because she knows Jesus!" |
"Somebody must have been praying" The biopsy was performed Monday morning. Our pastor was with us in the waiting room, as we waited for the results. After about an hour, the doctor came into the waiting room with his surgical mask still on. As he untied it and it dropped to reveal his mouth, we could see a smile. He said, "I don't know what happened but somebody must have been praying!" The biopsy revealed a bone cyst! It was not malignant. The tests all showed it to be a malignant cancer of the bone. Praise the Lord! The doctor recommended that Martha have Cobalt treatments (just to be sure). She had 10 treatments. The doctor said that the Cobalt might affect her ability to bear children, and would cause her to be shorter than she would be otherwise. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * On June 5, 1999, Martha was married to Parks Lonny McGregor II.
