Here are some stories and poems, quotes and sayings
that I find inspirational. I hope you enjoy them.

I Asked God

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.
I was made weak, that I might learn to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for -- but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

Wait

Desperately, helplessly, longingly, I cried
Quietly, patiently, lovingly God replied.
I pled and I wept for a clue to my fate,
And the Master so gently said,
"Child, you must wait".
"Wait? You say, wait!" my indignant reply.
"Lord, I need answers, I need to know why!
Is Your hand shortened? Or have you not heard?
By Faith, I have asked, and am claiming your Word.
My future and all to which I can relate
Hangs in the balance, and YOU tell me to WAIT?
I'm needing a 'yes', a go-ahead sign,
Or even a 'no' to which i can resign.
And Lord, I've been asking, and this is my cry:
I'm weary of asking! I need a reply!"
Then quietly, softly, I learned of my fate As my Master replied
once again, "You must wait."
So, I slumped in my chair, Defeated and taut
and grumbled to God, "So, I'm waiting...for what?"
He seemed, then, to kneel, And His eyes wept with mine,
And He tenderly said, "I could give you a sign.
I could shake the heavens, And darken the sun.
I could raise the dead, and Cause mountains to run.
All you seek, I could give, and pleased you would be.
You would have what you want --
But you wouldn't know Me.
You'd not know the depth of My love for each Saint;
You'd not know the power that I give to the Faint;
You'd not learn to see through the clouds of Despair;
You'd not learn to trust just by knowing I'm There;
You'd not know the joy of resting in Me
When darkness and silence were all you could See.
You'd never experience that fullness of Love
As the peace of My Spirit descends like a Dove;
You'd know that I give and I save...for a Start
But you'd not know the depth of the beat of My Heart.
The glow of My comfort late into the Night,
The faith the I give when you walk without Sight,
The depth that's beyond getting just what you Asked
Of an infinite God, who makes what you have LAST.
You'd never know, should your pain quickly Flee,
What it means that "My grace is sufficient for Thee."
Yes, your dreams for your loved one overnight would come true,
But, Oh, the loss! If I lost what I'm doing in You!
So, be silent, My Child, and in time you will See
That the greatest of gifts is to get to know Me.
And though oft' may My answers seem terribly Late,
My most precious answer of all is still,
"Wait."

Heaven's Grocery Store

I was walking down life's highway a long time ago, One day I saw a sign
that read, "Heavens Grocery Store." As I got a little closer, the door
came open wide, And when I came to myself, I was standing inside. I saw a
host of angels, they were standing everywhere. One handed me a basket
saying, "my child shop with care."

Everything a Christian needed was in that grocery store, And all you
couldn't carry, you could come back for more. First got some patience,
Love was in the same row, Further down was understanding needed
everywhere you go. I got a box or two of wisdom, and a bag or two of faith.
I couldn't miss the Holy Spirit for it was all over the place.

By then my basket was quite full but still had room for grace, Along with
strength and courage to help me run this race. I didnt forget salvation,
for salvation--that was free, So, I tried to get enough of that to save
both you and me. Then I started for the counter to pay my grocery bill,
For I thought that I had everything to do my Master's will.

But then I saw the prayers and just had to put some in, For I knew that
when I stepped outside, Id run right into sin. Peace and joy were
plentiful--displayed on the last shelf, With song and praises hanging
near for me to help myself. Then I said to the angel, "Now how much do I owe?"
He smiled and said, "Just take them everywhere you go." Again I smiled at
him and said, "How much do I really owe?" He smiled and said, "My child,
Jesus paid your bill long ago."

they'll believe any old rubbish." -- Gilbert K. Chesterton

The Visiting Pastor

A friend once told me the story of a Pastor who was often invited to
other churches to speak. On Sunday mornings before church he
would dress as a homeless man and sit outside the church doors as
the congregation was arriving. He would sit there and watch them
as they passed by him without even looking his way. He would try
to speak to them as they ignored him and hurried by to get inside.

Then he would quietly go and change into his fine clothes for
the service and enter the church to speak.

As he walked to the pulpit he would of course be warmly greeted by
these same members of the church who had just, moments before,
passed right by him without looking at him. Once in the pulpit
he would announce to them how wonderful it was to see them all for
a second time this fine morning, to which they would look around
at one another perplexed. He would then go on to explain that he
was the homeless man who had sat on the steps watching them enter
the church without acknowledging him. He then would begin his sermon.

My friend didn't say what his sermons were about,
but I imagine they included some scripture references such as...

Matthew 25:35-40
"'For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty,
and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in;
naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me;
I was in prison, and you came to Me.'
Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord when
did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink?
And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in,
or naked, and clothe You? And when did we see You sick or in prison,
and come to You?' And the king will answer and say to them,
'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of
these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.'"

Or maybe.....

Hebrews 13:2
"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,
for by this, some have entertained angels unawares."

What about you?
What impression would you make on this visiting pastor if he came to your church?
