    "Kimi Defends Mommy!"
    (but runs from her shadow)

"I am going to play with something soft and safe"

Last week somehow this graceful mommy sitting before you managed to crack her knee cap. Please don't ask me how because I have no idea....absolutely no idea and to have to keep telling everyone that gets a bit embarassing >g< I walked on it for the entire week before I finally decided I need to have a doctor look at it. When I came home from the doctors on Friday my leg was sporting a brace that goes from mid-thigh to mid-calf. Boy was Kimi ever confused!!

She spent the better part of the first half an hour following me around as I tried to get settled in ( I was told to keep it elevated and off of it for the weekend). She had the funniest, most confused look on her little face, you could almost see the questions coming from her eyes. She held her tiny head cocked to one side or the other as she followed me thru the house, looking at my leg. I think she was trying to decide if this newest contraption was friend or foe...or just for her own source of fun.

Once I finally got settled on the couch Kimi came to join me...and by this time she had decided this thing was 'attacking' her mommy by the leg and it MUST be defeated!! (before her mommy was "de-feeted"!!) Once on the couch with me Kimi climbed up onto my leg (I told you she is small!) and walked carefully up and down my leg sniffing all the while, trying to commit the smell to her memory incase this THING didn't leave willingly or came back after more of her mommy! Finding a comfortable spot on the top of my leg, laying so she was facing my feet Kimi decided chewing her way thru this thing was the only way to get mommy free of it. So chew she did. I reached down with a laugh and tried to lift her free, but all I got for my efforts was a grunt from Kimi. When I lifted her up I was met with resistance. She wasn't going to let go! Kimi grabbed a tighter hold of the strap to this thing and refused to let go. I even tried to pry her teeth loose, but the sweet dear was determined to 'save' her mommy from this horrible thing! I finally freed my leg from Kimi's grasp and brought her up to my face to talk to her. Kimi whined, she grumbled, she twisted in my arms so she could see this thing again. And then the scramble for freedom really began! Kimi tried jumping from my hands, she whined louder, she barked "YIP"! She was even running in place while I held her! Boy! Talk about perseverance. If she could have chased this thing away from mommies leg with pure determination Kimi would have won that battle! I finally got her to leave it go for now by distracting her with her favorite bunny toy. I sure am glad that bunny wasn't me. She took every frustration out on that poor thing.

Kimi wasn't finished trying to end the life of this evil wrap on my leg though. Not by a long shot. Every step I tried to take I had to do so with Kimi attached. If she wasn't near me when I began walking she was in front of me in no time at all. Once she heard my lopsided gait she came running. Kimi would stand before me like a tough little tigeress, her chest and head lowered to the floor, her little butt high in the air. If I moved to left left she dodged in front of me, if I moved to the right Kimi dashed in my way, blocking me again. And all the while she growled her most ferocious growl and "yipped" louder an ever before. I felt like we were doing a strange version of the Texas Two- step, canine style. I have spent the last few days playing heck trying to get away from the protection of Little Miss Kimi.

I know she is trying to protect and defend me from this evil thing, but how do I convince her this really is for my own good? Especially when I am having a hard time believing it myself! To many times in the past few days I have wished Kimi great success in rescuing me. If only she could chew her way to freeing me, I could walk easier. Especially without Kimi hanging on to my every step!!

I did discover though that my feirce and fearless litle tigress isn't as feirce as she might think! I think she has been pretending with us. The other night about 9 pm it was dark, but not completely black out. The light by the doorway behind us was on elluminating the yard and just beyond for our safety. Kimi had to go out to take care of....well...to check for burglars one more time ok? Anyway...I was standing here keeping an eye on my weary crime fighter and she was sitting in the grass watching the world go by and contemplating life when she spotted it! There was this HUGE black ugly 'creature' standing in her yard! Kimi jumped to her feet staring at this evil being! She wanted to go attack it and defend her world, I know she did. It's just that is was so BIG! Kimi had never seen anything quite so big before and this time ...being that it was so dark outside she was a bit scared herself. She stood her ground, ready to run or fight, whichever she decided would be best. Her ears were as erect as a young shelties ears can get, and I am sure her eyes were bright and wide. I couldn't tell because she wasn't facing me, you see. Her tail was down though so I know she was waiting for it to make the first move. And when this darkened ugly monster moved Kimi had made her decision about fighting! SHE RAN!!

Kimi turned on a dime and ran right for me! To the safe arms of her mommy! I bent down and picked her up to the saftey she sought and turned to carry her to the warm confines of our home. Kimi had to keep her eyes on this thing though, so she squirmed around until her front paws and her chin were resting on my shoulder. Kimi was making sure it couldn't sneak up on us from behind!! As I walked away carrying her, this horrible scarey thing followed us though, just as Kimi had feared. She whimpered and let out a cry as she scrambled in my arms trying to get into the house first! To heck with saving mommy, she was going to go hide! I didn't have the heart to tell Kimi this horrible, huge, ugly, black, creature didn't come from a lagoon. It was merely mommies shadow! Kimi may not be afraid of her own shadow, but she sure was mine!

Looks may indeed be deceiving, but even through deception they are darned scarey!!

Kristi (oh my little tigress has found something she can't defeat!)
Kimi (be quiet and hide me!)
