Notes from the president:  Mickey S. Evans (62)

The 2008 HHS Ex-Students Association Annual Reunion was held on Saturday July 26, 2008 at the Walker County Fairgrounds Main Building and was a huge success with approximately 167 in attendance.  We honored those classes beginning with a 3 or 8 this year.  The HHS Class of 1963 had a large turnout of about 40 following their own class reunion at Margarita's earlier in the day.  The Class of 1962 also held their annual reunion in the afternoon and had about 25 classmates in attendance..

We thank the Walker County Fairgrounds for the use of the facility, David Lanoue's Hitch'n Post for the super meal, and the Walker County Sheriff's Office for helping with the set up and tear down of the tables and chairs for the event.  The Huntsville Item also did a great job helping us advertise all of our local reunions through the generous use of their Best Bets Section.

We wish God's speed and continued success to our four 2008 scholarship recipients.  They are: Abigail Hyman, Andrew Townsell, Courtney Weber, and Kelsie Thaler.  Each will receive $2,000 over the Fall and Spring semesters  We wish all four of our younger Hornet brothers and sisters well in their journey into higher education.

We were able award the fourth scholarship this year due to the generosity of Jane Whittaker, the widow of Donald E. Whittaker, Jr., who was a graduate of the HHS Class of 1956.  She made a generous donation of $2,000 to our scholarship fund this year.  We would like to offer more scholarships each year, but we need to increase our membership to do so.  If you are not a member, please join us as an Annual Member, Life Member or Super Hornet.  See the Forms Page for details.

During our reunion this year, Mr. Gerardo Alarcon made a $10,000 donation to our scholarship fund.  We are sincerely grateful for his generosity and obvious love and affection for HHS and helping us assist younger Hornets with their higher education expenses.  This will allow us to offer at least four $2,000 scholarships for the next five years.  Thank you so much Gerardo!

The primary purpose of our organization is to promote friendship, fellowship and camaraderie for all Ex-Hornets.  We do, however, want to recognize deserving Hornets from each new graduating class with financial assistance to get them on their way.  More importantly, however, we need your support to maintain our association as a vibrant and financially healthy community service organizaiton.  We need your time, talent, and treasure to be successful in the future.  We welcome your thoughts, ideas and active participation.  Please join us today!

We also encourage classes and groups to conduct their reunions in the afternoons before our annual reunions on the third Saturday each July and then join us for the Annual Reunion that same evening.  It's a great way to spend a day in Huntsville and renew friendships with Ex-Hornets from all year groups.  Some classes meet every year and conduct a mini-reunion on Friday night, a class reunion on Saturday afternoon, and then join the HHSESA Annual Reunion Saturday night.  Later that evening a "night owl" session breaks out followed by breakfast the next morning before everyone leaves for home by noon.  Please contact us if you need help in making your plans.

Again, thanks for making the 2008 HHSESA Annual Reunion such a great success.  Please join us next year on Saturday, July 18, 2009 for an even better experience when we honor those classes ending in 4 and 9.
Please join us as an Annual, Life or Super Hornet to stay on our mailing list.
