Central European Highlights 5:

Prague (Part 2)

Prague is a charming city.

The great castle and the cathedral within, Charles Bridge with its statues of saints and all the stalls and shops in the old town selling different interesting souvenirs, Prague is a city of attractions. Without being bombed in the WWII, there were a lot of authentic old buildings dated centuries ago. The city itself is like a museum.

We spent the whole Saturday afternoon shopping. Shopping was one of my major purposes in this trip. As you know, the living standard of
Western Europe is quite high and souvenirs are usually expensive. Out of my whole travel plan in summer, perhaps Prague is the most economical place from a customer's point of view. However, it was not as cheap as you might think of in Eastern Europe. Prices were lower than that in Munich or Salzburg, but the difference was not that big. I was told that Prague is expensive relative to the rest of the country, due to its popularity among Western tourists. I saw Prague going on the same boat with the big cities in Mainland China.

We walked through the streets and lanes of the
Old Town. Narrow but tidy, they were packed with tourists from all over the world. A bit of a surprise, we found a lot of Koreans sightseeing there. Perhaps the Koreans will soon catch up with the Japanese in this hobby of shopping and photo-taking which made them well known in Europe.

Prague is charming, even more when it is in the dusk.

The streets were full of tourists, even more than in the day. My immediate impression was that it was like the night markets in
Taipei and Kaohsiung . To my astonishment, shops open until midnight on Saturday evenings. People from Hong Kong will find this nothing special. However, it is really an exception in Europe, where the norm is that shops close at 5 or 6pm. For example in Cambridge, usually only restaurants, pubs and supermarkets will you find them open in the evening.

Prague is a city of classical music. Though it is not as great as Vienna, it has a strong musical tradition, from the time of Mozart up to the present day. We went to see an opera, this time Mozart's Don Giovanni. This was a production by a young chamber opera company called Opera Mozart at the Estates Theatre. Though one could not compare the theatre's interior with the grandeur of the National Theatre in Munich, or a young opera company with the renowned and well-established State Opera of Bavaria, it was nonetheless a good production. As far as I noticed, most members of the audience were foreign tourists. What a contrast to the one in Munich, which seemed to me a social gathering of German middle-class dressed in black tie and fashion.

Walking along the old town and the castle area, we were amazed at the development of the capital of a once Communist country. We felt that we were just travelling in a city in
Western Europe. The infrastructure, esp. that for the tourists, was well developed in the city centre. However, there was one thing which reminded us that the Czechs still have a lot to catch up: train stations.

Travelling on a train from
Germany to Prague, if you pay attention to the train stations passed by, you will know when have you crossed the border. Train stations in Germany give you an impression of tidiness, well organisation and good infrastructure, while those in the Czech Republic are normally poorly maintained. There is a time lapse of ten or twenty years.

When we arrived at the Prague Main Train Station, we found ourselves in a sea of tourists, surrounded by many salespersons promoting their hotels and many so-called "information" counters which are actually commercial agencies for tourists' accommodation. The whole business there is really tourism-orientated. However there are always
snares and traps where tourists are cheated, let alone the danger of pick-pocketing.

Nonetheless,
Prague is still a charming experience.
