Fort Sumter

Back in 1860, South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Federal Union.  On April 12, 1861, early in the am, the first shots by Confederate soldiers were fired on Fort Sumter (armed by Federal soldiers).  Thus starting the Civil War.  I won't get into any more of a history lesson here.

The fort is smaller than I expected.  Many of its walls had been knocked down during battles from 1861 - 1865 (?).

We took a boat ride to visit the monument and park.  Spent an hour touring the site then back on the boat.

Here's the inside of the fort.  This section is called the Left Face.
Here's a cannon.  The track that they rolled on kind of intrigued me.

The opening this cannon shot out of has since been closed.
One of these buggers crapped on my pocketbook as we were headed back to Charleston.  Missed me by about 2 inches!

Turns out, some kids on the lower level were throwing out snacks to them.  The seagulls followed us all the way to the dock.
