Education: He went to high school up until ninth grade. In tenth grade he started home study and he got his high school equivalency ("...as far am I'm concerned I have a ninth-grade education and not a great one.")
Personality: He thinks of himself as a perfectionist and he thinks he is too critical of himself. "I have self-esteem issues. I think everybody does." Since he is so critical, he doesn't like to watch himself in movies.
How he met Leonardo DiCaprio: They met while doing the short lived television series Parenthood and they have been good friends ever since.
His thoughts on fame (like the fame of his good friend, Leo): "From what I've seen, that kind of life is interesting but really difficult. Yes, you get some amazing opportunities...But you get it so often, it's not like a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I think fame is a real test of what kind of person you are and if you can stay intact."
How he got into acting: Tobey decided to become an actor when his mother offered him $100 to take Drama instead of Home Economics in High School. Tobey had originally wanted to be a chef.
Some really random facts: He likes to play dominoes, he likes to cook, he's a vegetarian, he practices yoga and he no longer smokes.
Siblings: He has four half brothers but he primarily grew up as an only child. He mainly lived with his mother growing up but he has lived with his mom and her boyfriend, his mom and her sister, his aunt, his grandmother, with his father, his father and stepmother, his father and his father's brother, and his father and mother. "I lived in so many situations."
Places he's lived: Palm Springs, Ashalnd, Ore., Vancouver, San Fernando Valley, CA, Washington State and Los Angeles.
Tobey Maguire, 24, is one of the most talented actors of his generation but, unfortunately, one of the least known. One of Tobey's first big breaks was landing the lead role in the short lived sitcom "Great Scott!" when he was 17. He has since been in such movies as "This Boy's Life", "S.F.W.","The Ice Storm", and "Pleasantville" and he had cameos in "Deconstructing Harry" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Tobey was also the star of the Academy Award winning short film "The Duke of Groove." He recently finished shooting "Ride With the Devil" and "The Cider House Rules" both of which are slated to be released in the fall of 1999. Tobey has just finished shooting "Wonder Boys" in Pittsburgh with Michael Douglas and Robert Downey Jr. which is expected to be released around Christmas 1999.
