Taking Care of Your Rabbit Wood Shavings |
|||||||
As I mentioned above wood shavings are very useful in the rabbits tray where their droppings fall to. But, when using wood shavings you must know what kinds are good for your rabbit and what kinds are bad for your rabbit. a. Kinds that are good for your rabbit: We use a mixture of pine and spruce in the nestboxes and it works good. 1. Pine 2. Spruce 3. There are more that can be used but I do not know all the kinds of trees. b. Kinds that are bad for your rabbit: Some of these kinds are okay to use in trays but not in nestboxes. 1. Cedar - Because it is very oily and has a very strong smell *NOTE* Cedar can be used in trays (we use Cedar in the trays). I have heard of people who have used cedar in nestboxes but then switched to pine because of the smell. 2. Camphor - Because the smell is too strong *NOTE* Camphor should not be used in the trays, because the smell is too strong. 3. Eucalyptus - Because the smell is too strong *NOTE* Same reason as for Camphor 4. There are more that can not be used but I am not a tree expert. I would stick with Pine and Spruce for in the rabbit’s cage and Cedar for the trays. Pine and Spruce can be used for the trays, but Cedar smells so good it really helps take care of the urine smell. |
