The Flying Change

the flying change ( from one canter lead to the other )

hooves

What is the flying change ? : The flying change is when the horse changes directly from cantering on the left lead to cantering on the right lead, and vice versa ( i.e. changing the canter lead from the canter )

Changing the lead

1 ) This movement is best taught by asking the horse to change from counter canter back to normal canter.
So if > The horse has been down the long side of the arena on the right rein, and has then cantered a half-circle so that he is now cantering across the diagonal with the right leg leading.
2 ) as the horse nears the track and the ensuring left-hand corner, the rider must indicate to the horse that it must change from the right canter lead to the left lead ( if your horse has not learned to canter with you asking it by your outside leg than this information is us less really ). The rider momentarily blocks the horse's forward momentum by closing and setting the left hand, while at the same time changing her leg aids from asking for the right lead to asking for a left lead ( i.e. the rider's left leg is now applied at the girth, and the right leg used behind the girth to tell the horse to put his right hind leg down on the ground first ).
3 ) The horse than preform the flying change at the point of suspension that follows each canter stride.
4 ) As the result of the rider changing her aids from asking from canter right to asking for the canter left, the horse has landed on the left lead as required and can now continue to canter around the arena on the left rein.
