Coal-Bed Methane Gas Drilling
Current Issues | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Huerfano County has had many natural gas wells in the county for years. This form of gas drilling is not typically as destructive and wastefull of water as is coal-bed methane gas drilling. The Raton Basin is a geographical area of potential reserves of gas trapped in the coal beds and extends into Huerfano County around the Spanish Peaks, Walsenburg, La Veta and Cuchara areas. Currently there are less than 50 CBM wells in Huerfano County, but some people have predicted well over 1,500 could be drilled in our area. A single CBM well can waste over 3 million gallons of water a year! CBM drilling can be very destructive to the environment due to dust, pollution of the land, pollution of ground water, depletion of ground water, noise pollution, excessive traffic on county roads and more. The Colorado Oil & Gas Commission are charged with regulating the gas industry. Some counties in Colorado have adopted further regulations of the gas companies. Huerfano County currently does not have any additional regulations, requirements or restrictions. Please come to an EVER meeting to learn more about CBM issues and how you can become involved in protecting our quality of life, property values and local economy. |

Oil & Gas Royalty Rip-Off!
Your action is needed to help kill a bill that would deny O&G royalty owners their full royalty payments, put more money in the pockets of the already rich O&G industry and force Colorado taxpayers to subsidize the O&G industry. Since the State Land Board is the receipient of royalties of many state-owned mineral rights interests, this bill would have significant impact on revenues to schools and generally reduce revenues for the state. Please read the information put together by the East Huyatoas Citizens Alliance has put together on this issue and contact your representatives! |

Get Involved! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
See the Actions You Can Take on ways you can let your voice be heard! We are gathering citizens from all over the county to participate in a citizens group to work with our elected officials, San Isabel and gas companies to develop a master gas/energy development plan for hte county. |
