For this tank I choose the Berlin style method, because it promotes a natural enviroment allowing the fish, inverts and corals to thrive without adding lots of additives and other stuff like chemicals. The biological filtration is based in a 5" DSB with aprox. 550 lbs of sand and 230 lbs of live rock.

The chemical filtration is accomplished by a Top Fathom 300A skimmer, this skimmer is 6" in diameter and 36" tall with tangential water injection. I´ve used this skimmer for about 2 1/2 years and I couldn´t  be more happy, it is realiable, solid built and very effective. To be honest I´ve never seen any skimmer outperform this one. Although quite noisy (problem that I solved placing an old t-shirt above it and voilá! ), it really is one of the best purchases I´ve made.

Mechanical

Once or twice a month I place a fiber in between the baffles of my sump in order to remove all the organic matter in suspension in the water column, it has worked excellent for me but you got to remove the fiber after 1 or 2 days or it will turn into a nitrate factory.
