On a fair eve a young Demon walked the dunes of the shore. He was thinking to himself, walking, and enjoying the stars. He did not mind being on his own, he knew nothing different.
The Elders had once explained that since he was a Demon, most of his time would be spent alone. "Others do not understand, or truly want your company for very long." They explained, "Perhaps it is the coldness we carry, or the way we appear to be , beautiful and strong, yes, but not desirable at all, in some strange way,, we do not know. The only thing we can share with you is that you will never fit into other's palaces. Even if invited in, you are a Demon, you will always be left outside and alone in the end."
The young Demon heard this, but never really listened. Being a Demon he had a strong independent streak.
As he walked, this evening, he spotted strange blinking lights. At first he thought they where stars, only seeming to blink, but as he walked closer he saw that they were earth-bound creatures, not stars. He stood and watched for a while, trying to make out the strange sight, and the lights moved closer.
After some time he could see that they were fairies, playing by the moonlight. He could feel their warmth and hear the laughter. Slowly he approached.
He had heard of fairies, but never seen them. He saw their beauty, the light that surrounded them, the smiles that crossed the faces of the beings. He heard their joyful laughter.
As he moved slowly with caution they noticed him as well. They moved towards him, bringing their light and warmth and laughter with them. They swirled around him, bathing him in all that they were. They wrapped him in their essence, and he joined them, happily, in their dance.
For time on time he stayed in their company. Laughing, singing, loving the fairies as he had never had before. They told him od their love for him, as they wrapped him in their warmth, The Demon, never knowing warmth like this before, believed that it was their love. He allowed himself to wrapped in it, and gave his love in return.
Every night the Moon rose and the Demon would wake to the sound of fairy songs. He thought that their lights grew brighter as he joined them, although they were always bright. They would kiss him with tenderness, wrap him in that warmth and spend the time singing songs of love, happiness, and other things. He believed that he added to their happiness, as they added to his. It seemed that their happiness filled all around them. The Moon, the Sea and the Stars watched the dancing and seemed to revel in the togetherness. The Earth encouraged the dancing and singing, adding her voice through the Winds and the Birds to the song.
Then one night, as the Moon peered down on the Demon, he woke to find the blinking lights far away. He rose and chased them, but they moved away faster than he could move. Finally, he realized that they were to far away to join.
He wandered a while, wondering if he had offended them somehow, knowing that he had not. He tried to figure out why they had not waited for him to wake, why they had not been there to give him kisses and wrap in their warmth. For many evenings he thought and watched the water caress the shore. He missed the warmth, that was love, he missed the laughter, that was so like music, and he missed the songs whispered in his ear that accompanied the little kisses on his cheeks.
The Moon, the Stars and the Sea tried to console the Little Demon. The Stars twinkled brighter, the Sea caressed the shore and the rocks in a beat to mock the songs, the Moon smiled brighter on him. Although he appreciated the effort, it did not warm him as the fairies did. The Earth sent warm breezes, and song birds to him, but again, the effort was appreciated, but did not make up for his missing companions. Although he loved the Earth, the Moon, the Sea and the Stars, the love was not the same as it was for the fairies. He took the comfort offered, and waited and hoped that the fairies would return for him, but they did not.
Eventually the little Demon returned to Hell. The Elders had heard the stories, and saw the pained look on the Demon's face. They felt compassion, but knew that this was a lesson that the little Demon must learn.
He asked the Elders if they knew what had happened, why he had been gone for so long. They told him that the streams had run underground to tell them, that other Demons had seen him in the company of fairies, that they knew of the love, and the rejection, he had fallen into, by the look on his face.
He asked them why, "Why did the fairies leave? I love them and I thought that they loved me. What did I do wrong?"
"Nothing, young One," they explained.
"Then why? Why did they leave? If I did nothing wrong? Did I not love enough? Did I not love in the right way? Was I wrong? Did they never love me? What happened? Please, tell me, I do not want this to happen again. I do not want to love wrong, or to chase love away."
The Elders only shook their heads as they looked at each other and then at him. After a bit of silence one spoke.
"Young Demon, you are not to be loved in the way that you love. Your love will not be expressed as others can understand. Forever you will be misunderstood. You are a Demon, and will always be. Demons are not meant to be loved in the way that they love, or in the way that they want love returned. Even when others are in love with you, it will be short lived, for their true love is meant for another. This is how it has always been, for us all, this is how it always will be, for us all. We may be pleasing to the eye, we may seem strong, but we are never desired for very long. Perhaps we are to cold to touch, perhaps it is that we are not all that we seem to be at first, perhaps it is our nature to push away, or perhaps it is something we can not see, for it is in us, but all that love us can only do so for a short time, then they must move on. They always have and always will, for we are demons, and that it how it is."
Tears ran down the little Demon's face as he asked, "Why do we love, then? Why do we feel this? Want this? Why do we subject ourselves to this? If other can not love us as we love them, desire us as we desire them, why bother? I will never love again."
The Elders laughed at this. "Young Demon, we warned you of this. You were told to be aware, to guard yourself. Beauty, pleasing sounds and desire will always draw you to others, so you must be careful, or you will hurt. If you can avoid it, love, then by all means do. Know, though, that this is difficult for Demons, to not love, to not trust, to not be hurt. Many have tried to avoid it, and somehow they are still touched by love, then stung by love."
With that, the Elders walked away, leaving the little Demon alone.
He retired to his castle. He thought that it was funny that he had never minded being alone before, but now the silence was deafening, the cold numbing. He thought of the fairies, a smile on his lips, a tear in his eye, and hummed a sad song he had heard somewhere once before. He wished them well, lit a candle and went to sleep, vowing never to hurt again.
The Little Demon dreamed of fairies often, but never wandered that shore again.
