Sahara Challenge 2002
In March 2002 I joined a group of about 60 adventurers from around Britain hiking 100Km in the Sahara desert, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief.
This site contains my diary and photos from the trek. I hope some folk might find it interesting, and perhaps be inspired to do something similar.
It was hard going at times, but thanks to the Macmillan Challenge team, the guides, the guys from DA and the Berber support crew it all went smoothly. It was a fantastic experience, and the group raised a lot of money for a very good cause.
This is my personal account of the trek, for the official Macmillan site see the link at the bottom of the page.

Day 1, Arrival
The Manx flag in the Great Western Erg
Day 2, Setting off
That's me flying the flag, I'm middle aged, unfit
& sit at a desk all day,  so what am I doing on top
of a sand dune in the Sahara?
Just trying to do my bit and raise some money to help people with cancer,  and have a lot of fun at the same time into the bargain - can't be bad!
I've just written about the trek here, but the fund raising was a big part of the challenge.  I had some excellent help with that,   and it surprised me how generous people can be for a good cause - that's
a very rewarding part of the event.  If you're
thinking of trying something similar good
luck!  You won't regret it.
Day 3,  It's getting warmer
Day 4, Hiking across the hamada
Day 5, Sand and heat.  Lots of heat!
Day 6, Across the salt pan to the finish
Day 7,   An extra dawn hike
Day 8, Heading home
