Translation Unit
An Overview of Accomplishments
As what its name connotes, the Translation Unit is assuming the gargantuan responsibility of conveying the noble beliefs and thoughts of Imam Khomeini (r.a.) in different languages of the world. In reality, as a communication bridge the Translation Unit is endeavoring to serve the Imam’s enthusiasts and admirers beyond the Iranian frontier so that in such a way, they would be acquainted more with the religious thoughts and tenets of him who deserves to be called the Reviver of Islam in the 20th Century. The principal functions of this Unit are as follows: · Identifying and selecting competent translators; · Evaluating translators and determining the type and level of cooperation with them in the following areas:
· From Persian (Farsi) to other languages (letters, articles and books) · From other languages to Persian (Farsi) (letters, articles and books) · Translation of all received letters and articles, and produced films and interviews about Imam Khomeini on different occasions; · Determining the group of translators, editors, proofreaders, and typesetters for the translation into different languages the literary works of Imam Khomeini; · Solving cases of ambiguities and problems of translators in the pursuit of translation by referring to the extant original sources; · Direct supervision of the translation projects during the different phases of translation, edition, etc.; · Final review of the translations prior to printing; · Providing electronic copies of all translated works and sending the final printed copy of every book to the Printing and Publication Department of the Institute; · Study and review of the blueprint copy of every book vis-à-vis its original copy; · Responding to inquiries by the different Units in relation to translations and translated works and rendering relevant services to these Units in hosting international conferences and exhibits; · Determining the different groups of translators for holding international congresses and conferences and direct supervision over their respective tasks; · Preparing the final copy of translation-related contracts of agreement and forwarding the same to the Administration-Financial Department of the Institute, and following them up regularly; · Communication and coordination with the translators on sending and receiving the translation text and the concerned financial compensation; · Review, evaluation, and at times, translation of written literary works and books about Imam Khomeini in various languages.
An Overview of Accomplishments
Along this line, since the establishment of the Institute up to the present the Translation Unit has undertaken extensive activities within the general framework of the Institute’s policies the prominent among which are enumerated below: · Translation and publication of 39 titles from the literary works of the Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 153 sets in 21 living languages of the world; · Translation of more than 10 thousand received letters during the lifetime of the Imam from different countries, which had been filed in the Institute’s archive, as well as the translation of their replies; · Translation of more than 6 thousand letters annually from different languages (approximately 20 languages) to Persian and vice versa; · Translation of more than one hundred scholarly articles annually about the multifaceted aspects of the Imam’s personality, which have been received from various countries and in different languages; · Rendering service on providing translators and interpreters on the whole duration of international conferences in commemoration of the Imam; · Production and translation annually of more than 50 audio-video cassette records of interviews with guests and participants on different occasions, particularly about the Imam, his works and thoughts.
In consonance with the demands of time and
within the framework of improving academic and Translation of the monumental anthology, Sahīfeh-ye Imām in 22 volumes is the current long-term project—which through the grace of the Divine Providence and the guidance and assistance of the distinguished professors, researchers, and translators—the Translation Unit is determined to realize in the not-so-distant future.
In a bid to elevate the quality of translation and to know the views of the dear correspondents and readers, the Translation Unit along with its regular activities and taking benefit from its past experiences in the supervision and production of good quality translations of Imam Khomeini’s works, is undertaking the review and edition, if necessary, of all the translated works for new printing. A closer look at the outer form of the translated works (cover design, book dimension, font style and size, etc.); production and presentation of the translated works in computer CD form; more focus on the original text and avoidance of decentralized actions; and guiding the translation programs towards profound scholarly literary works are among our strategy for the future.
The Translation Unit consists of three permanent de jure desks: Arabic Desk, English Desk, Urdu Desk, and another de facto French Desk.
In addition to these four translation desks, the Translation Unit is maintaining a close link of cooperation with translators of a wide array of languages from Bengali to Swahili.
