A lot of the best movies you can see nowadays are what people sometimes call independent films. They are not big blockbusters by any means but if people would give them a try they would probably be surprised to find out that these independent films are much better than the big movies released by the major studios each year. At least they are in my opinion. On this page I have included some of the best movies that I have seen lately. Many of them I have had to rent since they did not bring them to any of our local theaters. If you have a chance I highly recommend you rent these movies. I would love to hear any comments you have on them so please feel free to email me at indiarose@msn.com
This movie is set in
a little Irish village named Tuliagh Morh (Tully Mor). Two lifelong friends
hear that there was a winner of the Irish lottery in their town, population
around 52 people. The movie follows their adventures in trying to figure
out who in their town is the winner of the lottery and their plotting to
convince that particular person to share the wealth with everyone. The
two main characters, Jackie and Michael are extremely funny. All the characters
in the movie draw you in and actually make you want to be there with them
while they try to track the winner down. If you love to laugh then this
is the movie for you and, if you are a lover of great beauty then the countryside
will amaze you. Although the movie takes place in a small Irish town it
was actually filmed on the Isle of Man. I hope anyone that sees this movie
loves it and laughs as much as I did the first time I saw it.
This movie is a comedy
about a very loud and obnoxious mother and her very quiet soft-spoken daughter
named LV or Little Voice. Little Voice has an amazing singing talent that
she only uses in her room away from her mother and the rest of the world.
The mother, played by Brenda Blethyn has numerous suitors that she brings
home but her current beau at the moment is an agent who sees himself as
the discoverer of great talent. One night he goes home with the mother
and hears this wonderful voice coming from an upstairs bedroom and it turns
out to be LV singing. The remainder of the movie shows what happens when
a ruthless promoter tries to take advantage of a quiet and very shy woman
against her wishes and a mother who does not understand anything at all
about her daughter. If you have a chance to see this wonderful movie pay
special attention to the actress that plays LV. Her name is Jane Horrocks
and all the singing in the movie is actually done by her. She has a wonderful
voice and they chose the perfect person to portray this shy individual
with a hidden talent.
This is a wonderful
movie about the life and times of the great Queen Elizabeth. The
beginning of the movie starts with her half sister, Queen Mary, sending
for Princess Elizabeth and imprisoning her in the Tower of London. Queen
Mary sends for her because she is believed to be very ill and her council
has advised her to imprison Elizabeth in the Tower so she will not be able
to become Queen in the event Queen Mary dies. Princess Elizabeth
is crowned Queen after her sister passes on. The remainder of the story
is filled with intrigue as Elizabeth finds out who her friends and enemies
are and. The director of this movie did an amazing job!! The costumes are
wonderful. The story is told in such a way as to make the viewer believe
they are involved. The acting is wonderful as well. Cate Blanchett
greatly portrays the role of Queen Elizabeth. I can't possibly imagine
anyone portraying the Queen as wonderfully as this actress.
This is a the story
about James Whale, the director of Frankenstein. He was a very famous director
in the 40's and 50's. He decided to leave it all behind and live out the
rest of his life painting and living a life of leisure. After numerous
strokes leave him in poor health the only person he has in his life is
his housekeeper Hannah. That is until she hires a new gardener by the name
of Clayton Boone. The movie deals with the friendship that develops between
the two men. Sir Ian McKellen is superb in the role of James Whale.
Lynn Redgrave is also very good as his housekeeper Hannah and Brenden Fraser
is surprisingly good in the role of Clayton Boone. This movie is
definitely worth checking out.
Eve's Bayou is the
story of a troubled Creole family and their problems in a summer of the
1950s. Samuel L. Jackson is the father of the family, Louis Batiste. He
is the doctor for the town that the family lives in. He makes house
calls for his patients and pays special attention to his women patients.
Lynn Whitfield plays his very understanding and caring wife in the
movie. Louis' sister, Aunt Mozell, has the gift of sight but has led a
very sad life. The oldest of Louis' two daughters is Cicely. Because
of the deep idolization of her father, Cicely's relationship with her mother
is interfered with. And then there is his daughter Eve which is played
by Jurnee Smollett. She is my favorite character in the movie. It's hard
to describe what this movie is about without giving any of the movie away.
The only thing I can say is to check the movie out and let me know what
you think of it.
This movie is set in
the year 1973. The movie deals with the relationship between family
members as they slowly realize that their family is coming apart. Strong
performances by Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, and Christina Ricci. I didn't
think I would enjoy this movie but I was completely wrong. I enjoyed
the characters in the movie and the time frame that it took place in. I
recommend that you give this movie a try. You might just end up liking
it!
This movie is about
a group of guys in LA that struggling to become actors and make something
of themselves. They try out for parts if they can but mostly the hang out
in all the cool hot spots. There are a variety of different characters
in the movie and every single one of them draws in. There are so many quotes
that have been taken from this movie. And the soundtrack is very, very
good. A little bit of swing music mixed with a different other styles.
All I can about this movie is "Your so money baby and u didn't even know
it" Watch this movie. I can almost guarantee that you will
like it!
I recently had the
chance to see the movie "American Beauty". I have to admit that I
was completely blown away by this movie. The director Sam Mendes
did an amazing job directing. I have to admit that I will never see
another paper bag flying in the wind the same way ever again. For those
of you that have seen the movie you know what i'm talking about.
For those that have not just keep your eyes open for that one particular
scene. The Burnham family is so dysfunctional that it is not even
funny. The actors in the movie give such great performances. I have to
say that I am very glad that Kevin Spacey won for his role as Lester Burnum.
He is such a great actor. He was wonderful in "LA Confidential".
Was awesome in "The Usual Suspects" and he was amazing in this film.
Without saying too much the way he transforms himself by the end of the
film is amazing. I highly recommend that anyone reading this takes
the time to watch this great film. I have seen it once and am dying to
see it again. It's the type of movie that you can see over and over again
and notice something different each and every time. I'll leave you
with my favorite quote from the movie. "Never underestimate the power
of denial"
This story takes place
in the early part of the 1900's. Its centered around a boy named Homer
Wells and a Dr who works at the orphanage where Homer grew up at. The Dr
is played excellently by Michael Caine. Dr. Larch takes Homer under his
wing and decides that Homer should be the one to follow in his footsteps.
He trains him in the art of delivering babies and performing abortions.
Homer is played by Tobey Maguire who was really good in the movie Pleasantville.
He portrays his character in this movie as a very charming yet serious
young man who is anxious to experience the outside world. The Dr thinks
of Homer as a son rather then one of his charges. Dr. Larch believes
in giving abortions to women who want one even if they are illegal at that
place in time. Homer does not feel that it is the right thing to do and
he rebels against Dr. Larch when Charlize Theron and her boyfriend Paul
Rudd show up the orphanage to take care of a rather unpleasant situation
they have gotten themselves into. When Charlize Theron's character and
her boyfriend leave the orphanage Homer decides to strike out on his own
and experience the world. Erykah Badu also has a role in the movie. I love
her music and her voice and I was quite surprised when I saw her name in
the credits. She is a very talented actress and I hope to see her in other
roles. I do feel a warning should be given ahead of time pertaining to
the sadness in the movie. I found myself crying in at least 3 different
parts of the movie. Anyone who says they did not cry is either a
much stronger individual then I am or just plain not telling the truth.
