Visiting a dietitian is one of the most
important first steps you can do
when becoming diagnosed with diabetes.
They can outline for you a diet which
will be personalized for your regular eating habits
and help you to control your sugar intake.

I can honestly tell you that, although I am being controlled with diet
if I don't follow it, I feel just terrible and when I do follow it I feel great!

Here are several important tips to follow before and after your visit with the dietitian:

Always eat three meals a day and allow 4 to 6 hours in between
Snacks in between meals should be small
A starchy food should be eaten at each meal
Follow the food guide, have a food from each food group at every meal
Refer to my links page for more information

Eat smaller portions if you are overweight
Drink juice in small amounts. Drink lots of diet pop and water.

NOTE: Avoid eating pure sugars such as
regular pop, candy, donuts, sugar in coffee, etc.
AND Fatty foods such as fried foods,
butter and margarine, creams, etc.

There are different types of sugars found in
foods. The key name used is Carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates can be added to foods or
naturally found in foods. Carbohydrates are
needed for the body to maintain energy.
They are found in starchy foods, fruit/vegetables, milk and foods to avoid.

A diabetic still needs to have some Carbohydrates but
they have to be maintained. Too large
a serving of them can raise your blood glucose level.
There are also several foods which
have low levels of Carbohydrates that do not effect
blood sugar levels. Foods such as:
Broccoli, cucumber, fresh tomatoes, cauliflower, asparagus, etc.

Just as an afterthought, did you know that an/a:

- average piece of apple pie has up to twelve teaspoons of sugar???

- half cup of orange juice has two teaspoons of sugar???

- one slice of bread (whole wheat) has three teaspoons of sugar???

- one small banana has four teaspoons of sugar???

- one carton of chocolate milk has five teaspoons of sugar???

- one 1-10 oz can of soft drink has eight teaspoons of sugar???

- one slice of cake has up to twelve teaspoons of sugar???

- half cup of milk has one teaspoon of sugar???

Make sure you check with your dietitian!!
