Gertrude Sharpe Oakley - (Malachi > Malachi II > Christian > Adam Leonard > Albert M. > Anthy) BURLINGTON — Mrs. Gertrude Sharpe Oakley, 82, of 341 Williamson Street, died Wednesday morning, July 17, 2002, at her residence after a brief illness. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the Late Julian James Oakley and the daughter of the Late Duncan Albert Sharpe and Antha Isley Sharpe. Mrs. Oakley was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, where she also taught the Dorcas/Ready Sunday School Class and formerly taught the Beginners Sunday School Class. Mrs. Oakley was also a charter member of the Nall Memorial Baptist Church. Mrs. Oakley was a member of the L and M Birthday Club and the North State Boating Club. In addition to her memberships, Mrs. Oakley was an avid gardener and seamstress. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra O. Dodson and her husband, David, of Staley; her son, David M. Oakley and his wife, Dale, of Graham. Mrs. Oakley was preceded in death by her son, J. Keister Oakley, and is survived by her daughter-in-law, Edith. In addition, Mrs. Oakley is survived by her grandchildren, Stanley N. Dodson, Lisa D. Kidd, Julian F. Dodson, Julia D. Oakley, Jami D. Oakley, Christopher T. Oakley, and Donna O. Clark. She is also survived by 7 Great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Miss Thelma Sharpe, Mrs. Janie Bowman and Mrs. Betty Stack; and her brothers, Adrian Sharpe, Jacob Sharpe, Kelly Sharpe, John Sharpe, and Wade Sharpe. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Calvary Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Ernest Beck and the Rev. Wade Cox. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. Front St., D-3, died at 9:20 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2002, at Duke Medical Center after a critical illness of four days. A native of Burlington, she was the wife of Dr. Walstein Welch “Wally” Snyder, who survives, and the daughter of the late Coy M. Mann and Pearl Isley Mann. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and was a Mary Kay consultant. She was a member of Elon Community Church (United Church of Christ), and served as a deacon and president of the Women’s Fellowship (Elon Community Church, UCC). She had a life membership in the Women’s Fellowship of Southern Conference. Mrs. Snyder was a graduate of Burlington High School and attended Elon College. She was a member of the Board of Aldermen, Town of Elon College, for 20 years and served as treasurer and mayor pro-tem. She was a volunteer for 25 years with the Red Cross Blood Program, and the Elon University Alumni Association. She was very active in a supportive role during her husband’s 30-year tenure as chief executive officer of Elon Homes for Children, 1960 to 1990. She was a former president of Western High School PTA, a member of the Women’s Division of the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce (past president, Board of Directors), the Women’s Golf Association of the Alamance Country Club, and the Senior Couples InterCity Organization (SCOI golf association). Mrs. Snyder was an honorary member of the Alamance County Service League, and received the “Woman of the Year Award” presented by the Burlington Civitan Club in 1971, and received the Distinguished Service Award from Elon University. Survivors other than her husband of the home include three children, Mr. Wesley Snyder and wife, Donna, of Virginia Beach, Va.; Mrs. Elia Ann Snyder Moser and husband, Larry, of Burlington, and Ms. Rita Snyder of Greensboro; eight grandchildren, Mrs. Lori Snyder Aycock and husband, Trey, of Greensboro, Mr. Ryan Snyder of Washington, D.C., and Mr. Morgan Snyder and Mr. Andrew Snyder, both of Virginia Beach; Mrs. Emily Moser Johnson and husband, D.J., of Burlington; and Mr. Neil Moser and Mr. Evan Moser, both of Burlington, and Ms. Julie Kenney of Greensboro; four brothers, Mr. William P. “Bill” Mann and wife, Shirley, of Burlington, Mr. Clinton Mann of Burlington, and Mr. Gerald Mann and wife, Peggy, and Mr. Ferald Mann and wife, Betty, all of Graham; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Mann Miles of Burlington, Mrs. Sarah Mann Sizemore and husband, Bill, of Graham, and Mrs. Marie Bowlin and husband, Scottie, of High Point; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles (Peggie) Mann of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews, and also Barry and Becky Brasloff of Greensboro She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Charles Mann. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Leroy Davis, and the daughter of the late Lemuel N. Shoffner and Ida Isley Shoffner. She was retired from textile manufacturing and the Davis Service Station. She attended Friendship United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Mr. Ronnie Lee Davis of Snow Camp; two sisters, Mrs. Eunice S. Holt of Burlington and Mrs. Nettie S. John Lee “Pops” McPherson - Malachi > George > Molly > George Moser > Charles Moser > Imogene Moser) GRAHAM — John Lee “Pops” McPherson, 76, of Etowah, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Pardee Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Alamance County and lived in Graham, N.C. most of his life spending the past seven years in Etowah and Graham, N.C. He was the son of Imogene Moser McPherson of Burlington, N.C. and the late John H. McPherson. He was preceded in death by his first wife Betsy Starr McPherson who died in 1992. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation as a Highway Engineer for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He was a leader in the Boy Scouts of America Cherokee Council for 25 years, past member of Graham Exchange Club, and member of the Alamance County Senior Golf Association. He was an Associate member of Cummings Memorial United Methodist Church in Horseshoe, N.C. and member of First United Methodist Church in Graham, N.C. In addition to his mother he is survived by his loving wife Betty Richardson McPherson; two sons Don “Bolt” McPherson of Burlington, N.C. and Worth McPherson and his wife Debbie of Graham, N.C.; one daughter Rev. Beth Crissman and her husband Rev. Kelly Crissman of Asheville; five stepdaughters, Carol Hill and her husband Jeff, Debbie Golebiowski and her husband Danny, Robin Farr and her husband Hollis, Sandy Kuffel and her husband Larry, and Nancy Bradford and her husband Alan; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild 12 stepgrandchildren and three great-stepgrandchildren; one sister Ellen Huffines and her husband Grover and two nephews. He was retired from the hosiery industry and from Baby Needs.
