BURLINGTON — Mrs. Mabel Shoffner Newton, 88, of 2218 Hyde St., formerly of Wood Ave., died at 7:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three years of failing health and a critical illness of one week. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Walter Alexious Newton Jr., and the
daughter of the late Daniel Moody Shoffner and Blanche Isley Shoffner. She was retired from Hole-N-None and was a member of Nall Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Pat Slaughter and husband, Vic, of Graham, Mrs. Sandra Arenas and husband, Cass, Ms. Judy Harris, Mrs. Glenda Day and husband, Doug, and Ms. Brenda Mahaley, all of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Donnie Johnson of Burlington and Ms. Ruby Longerier of Greensboro; four brothers, Mr. Phalti Shoffner of Pilot Mountain, Mr. Bill Shoffner of Hickory and Mr. Winfred Shoffner and Mr. Dover Shoffner, both of Snow Camp; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nall Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Wade Cox. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. GRAHAM — Mr. Obie Tyson Johnson, Sr., 85, 722 Oakgrove Dr., died at 10:50 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Rehabilitation and Healthcare of Alamance after several years of failing health, four weeks critical. A native of Chatham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Carmen Beaver Johnson, who survives, and the
son of Mr. William Henry Johnson and Mrs. Mary Inez Isley Johnson, both deceased. He was a retired knitter for Kelwood Hosiery and a former member of the Burlington Moose Lodge. Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Mr. O. Tyson Johnson Jr. of the home and Mr. Dennis R. Johnson of Statesville; and three grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by a son, Mr. David L. Johnson; two sisters, Mrs. Guy (Myrtle) Brewer and Mrs. Thadeous (Bessie) Brewer; and five brothers, Mr. Paul Johnson, Mr. Clyde Johnson, Mr. Dwight Johnson, Mr. Robert Johnson and Mr. Alton Johnson. WHITSETT — James Doyle Overman Sr., 90, of 6611 Burlington Road, died Friday, June 22, 2001 at his home after 18 months of failing health. A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Harue Holt Overman, who survives, and the
son of Thomas Franklin Overman and Vessie Isley Overman, both deceased. He was retired from Gilbarco and a member of Gibsonville United Methodist Church for 52 years. He was a member of the church’s administrative board, a trustee and Sunday school class president for many years. He served in the Marines during World War II. Survivors other than his wife of the home, include a son and daughter-in-law, James “Jim” D. and Susan Overman Jr. of Elizabeth City; a brother, Robert W. Overman of Burlington; and two grandchildren, Beth Overman and Janet Overman. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Rich, and a brother, Bennie Overman. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Gibsonville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. John Howard, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. BURLINGTON — Mrs. Lois Lineberry Sykes, 95, of 1323 Kilby St., died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Alamance Health Care after an illness of three months. A native of Spray, Va., she was the wife of the late Eleby Sykes, and the
daughter of Robert F. Lineberry and Mattie Isley Lineberry, both deceased. She was retired from the Celanese Corporation and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Eddie (Catherine) Westbrook, Mrs. Frank (Marion) Westbrooks and Mrs. Bill (Mabel) Stamps, all of Burlington; two sons, Homer “Bud” Sykes of Burlington and Tommy Sykes of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. BURLINGTON — Mr. J. Cline Graves, 81, of 2629 Jacobs Trail, Burlington, died at 10:05 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Pearl Carter Graves, who survives, and the
son of Mr. Paul McDowell Graves (Paul is also an Isley family member) and Mrs. Novella Isley Graves, both deceased. He was a former farmer and hosiery worker and was employed at Kayser-Roth in Alamance for 42 years. He was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church. Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Glenda Gayle Sizemore of Julian; two sons, Mr. J. Von Graves, and Mr. Rudy M. Graves, both of Burlington; a sister, Ms. Gladys Graves Loy of Burlington; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Miss Christine Graves and Mrs. Faye Graves Coble. BURLINGTON — Mrs. Edna Kivett Murray, 81, of 1604 W. Front St., died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Twin Lakes Center after a critical illness of two months. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Edward Lane Murray, and the
daughter of Mr. Thomas Henry Kivett and Mrs. Lorah Isley Kivett, both deceased. She was a retired secretary from Burlington Industries and was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Burlington Women’s Club. Survivors include a son, Mr. Thomas E. Murray of the home; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Kivett Graves of Burlington. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Lane Maxwell; and a sister, Mrs. Ann Crane. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Macedonia Lutheran Church by the Rev. Stephen C. GREENSBORO — Mr. Zebulon Vance Coble Jr., 86, of 1317 McDowell Drive, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. Funeral services for Mr. Coble will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel with interment following at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Coble was born in Burlington, N.C. on August 23, 1915, to Zebulon Vance Coble Sr. and Martha Rachael Isley Coble. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II. Mr. Coble worked as an insurance underwriter for Prudential Insurance Co. Mr. Coble and his wife Louise would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on June 10, 2002. He is survived by his wife Louise Oliver Coble of the home; three sons, Van Coble and his wife, Laurie, of Blacksburg, Va., and Wayne and Ronnie Coble of Greensboro; a daughter, Ellen C. Kavanagh and husband, John, of Greensboro; and three grandchildren, Mary Ellen Kavanagh, Elizabeth Anne Kavanagh, and Sean Coble. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Wednesday evening, June 12, 2002, at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service North Elm Street.

BURLINGTON — Mrs. Vivian Greeson Stewart, 84, of 909˝ Fair Street, died at 1:04 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, one month serious.
A native of Guilford County, she was the
daughter of Mr. Adolphus Greeson and Mrs. Roxie Isley Greeson, both deceased. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Julia Carr of Angiers; four sons, Mr. Larry Stewart of Louisiana, Mr. Douglas Stewart of Greensboro, Mr. Earl Stewart of Graham and Mr. Charles Stewart of Mocksville; Mrs. Allene Shoe of Greensboro; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

GRAHAM — Mrs. Margaret Pearson Deese Payne, 87, of 4817 N.C. 54, died at 8:05 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at her home after three months of failing health. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. George C. “Tom” Payne and the late Mr. Crawford C. Deese. She was the
daughter of Mr. Charlie Pearson and Mrs. Lee Annie Isley Pearson, both deceased. She was retired from Randon and was a member of Mebane Street Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Barbara West of Canton, Ga. and Mrs. Kaye Kenn of Roswell, Ga.; a son, Mr. Charles D. “Buddy” Deese of Semora; three sisters, Mrs. Beulah Foushee of Graham, Mrs. Vera Terrell of Efland and Mrs. Catherine Thomas of Mebane; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. husband of the late Mrs. Helen Isley Cheek. He was a member of Grays Chapel Lions Club and Grays Chapel United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ann Baldwin of Climax and Mrs. Carol York of Asheboro; a brother, Mr. Raymond H. Cheek of Lake Forrest, Calif.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two stepgrandchildren; and four great-stepgrandchildren. son of Mr. E.A. Murray and Mrs. Bertha Isley Murray, both deceased. He was a retired grading contractor and attended Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the Alamance Chapter Antique Car Club of America, member of the N.C. Region Antique Car Club of America and the National Antique Car Club of America, the Early V-8 Club. Survivors include two sons, Mr. Archie Murray of Roxboro and Mr. Dwight Murray of Snow Camp; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Baker of Snow Camp; a brother, Mr. Bascom Murray of Snow Camp; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

daughter of Mr. Leonard P. Allred Sr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Isley Allred, both deceased. She attended Greensboro High School. She was a long-time homemaker and was retired from Sears. She was a member of Burnetts Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, nursery worker and pianist. Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Gail Shepherd of Burlington and Ms. Debbie Cheek of Greensboro; two sons, Mr. Wallace Harrison of Greensboro and Mr. John Harrison of Trinity; three brothers, the Rev. GRAHAM — Mrs. Mary Robertson Vaughn, 76, of 1727 South Main Street, Graham, NC, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at 8 a.m. at her home. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. A native of Alamance County, she was the
daughter of the late Willie Bruce Robertson and the late Swannie Mozelle Isley Robertson and the stepdaughter of the late Mrs. Marie Smith Robertson. Mrs. Vaughn was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church of Graham, where she was a longtime member of the United Methodist Women of which she was very active. Having retired from D&S Hosiery, she was a devoted homemaker. She is survived by her loving husband, Elton M. Vaughn of the home; two sons and their wives, Michael T. & Cindy Vaughn of Burlington, Roger D. & Kim Vaughn of Elon; five grandchildren, Jayson, Phillip, Karie Vaughn of Burlington, Brian and Justin Vaughn of Elon; three sisters, Helen Beatrice Robertson Stewart of Burlington, Betty Jane Robertson Murray of Burlington, Norma Glenn Robertson Smith of Graham; two brothers, Harold Ervin Robertson of Burlington, James Blaine Robertson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was preceded in death by a sister, Hortense Robertson White and one brother, William Bruce Robertson. son of Mr. C.L. (Con L,) Graves and Mrs. Vita Isley Graves, both deceased. He was a self-employed landscape contractor and a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Lutheran Men, the Burlington Shrine Club, Amran Temple and the Thomas Holt Masonic Lodge. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was the former president of the North Carolina Nursery Association. Survivors other than his wife of the home include one son, Mr. James H. “Jim” Graves Jr. of Burlington; a stepson, Mr. J.
