James Madison Isley (Malachi > Philip > George > James) was born July 4, 1825, in Gwinnett County, Georgia. James married Martha Goode while he was living in Alabama. Martha is thought to have died circa 1856. After Martha’s death, James did migrate to Missouri and was issued a land patent 1 May 1857 in Cass County, Missouri. His stay in Missouri was short. He was enumerated in Visalia, Tulare County, California in 1860. He was the only person enumerated in his household. James Madison was then issued land patents in Kings County, California on 1 November 1860 and 22 January 1861. He then migrated to Oregon sometime between 22 January 1861 and 16 October 1865 when he married his 2nd wife Melvina Pennington. James and Melvina were enumerated in Hillsboro, Washington County, Oregon in 1870. His sons by his first wife, James Madison Jr. and William Relford, joined him in Oregon by 1880. Census records and death records reflect that most of his descendants remained in the Oregon/Washington area. Several lived in Alaska for a while.
OREGON became a territory in 1846 and became the 33rd State on February 14, 1859.
To this day there is controversy over the name of the state.
World Book Encyclopedia states: The Columbia River was at one time called the Oregon or Ouragan, which means Hurricane in French. Others believe the name was derived from a mapmaker's error in the 1700s. The Wisconsin River was named the Ouisconsink and was picked up by travelers referring to the country west of the Great Lakes as Ourigan.
