Jim Fabris is a writer and writing coach in Austin, Texas. He has a Master's of Arts in Teaching and eleven years of experience teaching high school, five of them teaching AP English at Austin ISD's prestigious Liberal Arts and Science Academy. He currently works freelance for Pearson Educational Measurement, the developers of the TAKS tests and the upcoming End of Course Tests, and for Educational Testing Service, the developers of the AP and SAT tests. He is also is working on a novel. |

Session 1: Memoir & Creative Nonfiction Jim will lead the group through a series of games and activities designed to help young writers mine their memories and other true stories for great writing ideas. Participants will: *transform unforgettable experiences into unforgettable pieces of writing *create compelling descriptions by appealing to all five of the reader's senses *identify important life turning points and use writing to reflect on their meaning June 8 - 25 Ages 11 - 13: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 pm Ages 14 - 19: Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:30-3:30 pm Session 2: Fiction The group will engage in activities to spark the young writer's imaginations, so they can create original works of fiction. Participants will : * develop complex three dimensional characters * create compelling plots that are rooted in the character's conflicts * write dramatic and dynamic dialogue that both develops the characters and pushes the plot forward June 29 - July 16 Ages 11 - 13: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 pm Ages 14 - 19: Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:30-3:30 pm In all the sessions will provide group activities, individual writing time, and sharing time. Creative freedom will always be valued and encouraged. Snacks and writing supplies will be provided. |
