Fong Sai Yuk is a hilarious movie about a young martial artist and his fight against the established Manchu Government. Based on Chinese history, there were indeed secret societies who fought to overthrow the Manchus and to restore power to Chinese. Fong Sai Yuk was a member of one of these societies, the White Lotus Society.

In the beginning of the movie, Fong Sai Yuk (Jet Li) is a young boy who is known to be the best martial artist in town. At a small local tournament, he wins a relay race and gives the medal to a girl, a newcomer to the town.

After the race, Fong Sai Yuk hears about a martial arts competition, a fight with the mother of the house. Whoever wins will win the daughter's hand in marriage. Not being able resist a good fight, and to retain the title of the best fighter in town, Fong Sai Yuk enters the competition and is about to win when he sees the face of who he thinks the daughter is. It is an ugly woman so he looses on purpose.

His mother (Josephine Siao), a crazy cloth store-owner, hears about this and is furious that his son lost. Saying that she is Fong Sai Yuk's brother, Fong Tai Yuk, she battles the mother of the family and wins! But she is already married, and she is a girl! So, instead, the family goes and finds Fong Sai Yuk instead. He thinks that the girl he is about to marry is an ugly girl (you can imagine all the hilarious scenes in this) when it is indeed his love from the beginning of the movie. After finally figuring this out he he happily agrees to the wedding.

Meanwhile, Fong Sai Yuk's father is in trouble. In his possession is a list of all the members of the White Lotus Society, a list that the Govenor wants so he can be rid of all who oppose him. At Fong Sai Yuks wedding the Govenor (Wing Zhao) appears as a guest and see Fong Sai Yuk's father. He is captured, the entire family must flee, and it is up to Fong Sai Yuk to rescue his dad.

This movie is both serious and funny. I love watching this moviel; the martial arts here are excellent. Josephine Siao is hilarious and Wing Zhao plays a tough rival against Jet Li. There is also a sequel, where Fong Sai Yuk himself is a member of the White Lotus Society and must find who is a leak in the society. This movie is equally enjoyable as the last. I recommend both to anyone who loves kung fu movies.
