What is acne? About 20 to 25 per cent of the population especially between the ages of 12 and 40 suffers from acne. It consists of many different types of spots - whiteheads (which are filled with pus), blackheads, inflamed bumps called papules, deep tender nodules under the skin and larger fluid-filled swellings or cystic acne. Many people experience acne during adolescence. This skin problem can arise either from disease conditions or as a result of skin changes associated with hormonal changes. Sebum, the body's natural skin oil is over produced. As the sebum flows from the sebaceous glands toward the skin's surface, dead skin cells adhere to it and block the pores. An uninfected blocked pore is a black-head, while ones infected with bacteria become red raised pimples or whiteheads. |
