| Australian soil is very high in Iron, yet despite this one of the biggest causes of illness in horses is anaemia. WHY? Because Iron needs Copper to assist in it's absorption into the body. Copper has been depleted from soils by chemical farming. No matter how much Iron you give them, they will not be able to use it unless they have adequate amounts of Copper. Supplementation with Copper will raise Iron levels very quickly, and it has the added advantage of not suppressing Vitamin E, as Iron does. An affordable way to provide Copper is by administering Copper Sulphate in the feed. However, be aware that too much Copper can be toxic - it is suggested not to exceed more than 1 teaspoon daily initially, then decrease to a 1/4 teaspoon when symptons subside. Symptons of lack of Copper include: Anaemia, scouring, lack of colour in the coat, worm infestations and fence chewing (or anything wood - in the horses search for Copper!). They may also have no resistance to diseases; mainly fungal like (e.g. greasy heel, ringworm) and interior parasites (worm infestations). To dry up greasy heel, you could try 2 teaspoons of Copper Sulphate in a litre of water & wash down the affected horses heels with it. Dry well with a towel. Also provide one 1 teaspoon of Copper in diet. This will usually clear it up in a matter of days. |
