Little is known about the Key. His identity and origin remain a mystery. He started out as a technician in the narcotics division of Intergang. At some point he began to use psycho-chemical drugs to boost his already superior intelligence. These drugs allow his ten senses free reign to tap into the world both inside and outside of himself. His schemes, designed to make him master of all reality, have brought him into conflict with various memberships of the JLA, most recently in his bid to mate with the Lock and become master of all time and reality. The Key has used his psycho chemicals to ensalve the minds of the JLA, using them to battle one another, to carry out his will and placing them in dream realities in order to tap into their own mental energies. It is interesting to note that though the Key considers himself more free than the average human, he is enslaved to both his own dreams of ultimate power and to his drugs. Overuse of these checmicals has resulted in physical damage, with the Key recently coming out of a long coma. The Key relies on his mental powers, his psycho-checmicals and his robots, dubbed the Keymen, to help carry out his plans. The Key was recently trapped in a "fractal time-maze" created by the Martian Manhunter, yet escaped to pop up in the pages of Batman: Gotham Knights, having found that the key to departure was the fact that there was no key!
