Welcome to a journey of individual study and research!

February 8, 2006

I have managed to obtain SPSS 13.0 for the statistics portion of both these studies. Apparently there are significant changes to this version so I will have to take some time to study the program and become familar with it again. I also expect to begin distributing surveys at Cal-State this month. New data could be posted as early as next month. Also, I am no longer relying on updating a file off-line to expedite updates. Instead, I am typing the html directly into geocities to make things move a bit faster. I will try to update the "sociology links" section soon to help visitors reach related sites of interest. I have abandoned the forum due to the lack of participation (yes, we are all busy but mostly I cannot find the time to update the site and moderate several discussions-alas, I must work for a living too).

More than 200 surveys were collected from Bakersfield College with more on the way. The Cal-State surveys are yet to be printed and will be distributed some time in February through March 2006. Also, an updated newer version of SPSS will be used for the statistical analysis in the Internet Culture study. It is my hope that data can be gathered and compiled by the end of March or April and by May 2006 the literature review can be brought up to date with more articles in regard to emoticons and Internet experience.

Currently, there are no updates that I am adding as far as data is concerned. Most of this update is related to news. Categories for variables are being constructed for data purposes and there has been some question as whether or not some variables should be collapsed.

I wanted to take the time to apologize for what might have seemed to be a delay in updates on my part. Evidently, I uploaded the wrong index file and for everyone who checked this site in the past couple of weeks and did not see the updates I referred to earlier, I realize now what happened. To reassure you, the site is being updated every few months as promised but it only works if I upload the correct file. The confusion probably came from installing my new hard drive which will enable me to store and track the many web pages I am writing.

I've added the Internet Culture Study link in the left navigation bar or you can access it here. This is a basic page that does not have much yet but is the beginning of a much larger work in progress. Please check back and I promise I will upload the correct files this time. I have not yet included the actual survey because it has not yet been distributed. I have only included the design and some background regarding the study. Please review and any constructive comments would be appreciated.

March 28, 2005

Soon I expect to add more information in regard graduate projects that I am working on. This will also be the site that will host updates for an Internet Culture Study in progress. Included will be the questionnaire, study design, resources and information about the sample.

The forum has been added and now you can register and add to the general discussion here. I invite professors and students or anyone interested in sociology and research to join and post anytime. The study of society is everybody's business.

Basically, this site is meant to offer other graduate students the opportunity to explore projects that can be done in the libraries on campus and introduce the excitement of researching journal archives. In this case, the research that I am conducting is focused on 20 years of sociological methods used in articles published in the Journal of Marriage and the Family.

In addition, I will maintain a few pages that will include links, my research journal, the research paper, resources, and possibly a forum. I would encourage students to read as much of the material as possible that I post to get an idea what this assignment accomplishes. I would welcome comments and suggestions so long as they are constructive and can be reasonably considered.

I would be the first to admit that this work is in early development, but quite a bit has already been done. The current journal for this projects is already over 10 pages in length.
