CONTEMPORARY ISSUES The Recomposition of Hmong Rituals in the French Context French original title: "La recomposition des rituels hmong dans le contexte français" Kev hu plig, ua tshoob kos, ua dab qhuas nyob Fab kis teb Kao-Ly Yang The original article has been published in "Hommes et Migrations, France Terre d'Asie" in French language: " Cheminements hmong, khmers, lao, viêtnamiens", N° 1234 ? November-December, 2001 L'article original a été publié dans "Hommes et Migrations, France Terre d?Asie. Cheminements hmong, khmers, lao, viêtnamiens", N°1234 -Novembre-Décembre, 2001 READ THE WHOLE ARTICL E IN FRENCH, click here The article explores the reproduction of Hmong rituals and rites in France after 1975. The data come from participating observation where the author has been attending more than one hundred parties and celebrations from 1991 to 1999 in France and in Laos. The observations focused on changes in term of material aspects and organizational features of a time of celebrations. About twenties marriages and rituals of calling the soul(s) (hu plig) have been meticulously recorded and saved in notes. Informal comments have been requested from participants. A feedback from traditional leaders had been asked once the article was written to clarify questioning points. The outline of the article emphasizes 4 parts: 1.) Describing and classifiying the rites and rituals; 2.) Describing their practices in the French Context; 3.) Analyzing their changes; 4.) Relating reproduction of rituals and definition of ethnicity. Summary: In the French context, Hmong people still practice most of the traditional rituals or groups of rites of passage such as - Calling the soul(s), - marriage - funerals, - the healing rituals, - the rituals of fertility, - and the rites of passage of time They take place within the groups of domestic rituals of the household. Only the ritual of new rice seems disappeared. Observations showed there are borrowings of foreign concept of celebrations such as the birthday for children or the evening parties, or borrowing of of fragment of some celebrations that they integrated in an exisiting celebrations such as the sequence of the white dress during the wedding. The marriage: there are changes because of the introduction of Lao and French features into Hmong marriages that are finally considered as a part of Hmong heritage: the wedding behold 3 sequences: Part 1: the bride wears a traditional dress, Part 2: the bride wears a Lao dress Part 3: the bride wears a white dress. The funerals: they may be dividing in two times and happen in France for the main part, and in Southeast Asia or in the United Stated for the second time regarding the liberation of the soul happens (Hassoun, 1992). Traditional rituals acquire a recreational dimension where there is a process of folklorizationwhich. The ritual is a show, a play-role in the case of the wedding where all social protagonists play their parts. The introduction of new space (reserve a big room for a big wedding) modifies gender relationship: men and women eat in the same time. The traditional way for a celebration will be men then women. The borrowing process from Lao culture happens out of geographical contacts with the Lao society in Laos, and thus the borrowing process persists beyond time and in representation among Hmong refugees in Western. This concept of "Out-of-Geographical contact cultural change" --beyond the first cultural and social contact-- is an important finding in the theories of cultural changes because it holds the key to understand the process of globalization of minority and stateless people. This article was presented during the Colloquium "Cheminements: Cambodgiens, Hmong, Laotians, Vietnamiennes en France" organized by the Association D'une Rive à l'Autre, Le CERIEM, Université de Haute Bretagne 2, Rennes, France, October 12-14, 2000.
