Kita was born on Halloween in 1998.  She is the result of breeding Ch. Storm Kloud's Corner the Market WWPDX WTD CGC ROM, known also as Cash, and Ch. Storm Kloud's At It Again WLDX WTDX WWPD ROM, also known as Andy.  Her mother was a member of the only AKC registered Alaskan Malamute team to ever run in the Iditarod sled race up in Alaska, as was Kita's grandmother, Tabetha.  Cash was the #1 Malamute in 1998 and is a multiple Best in Show winner, in addition to having been an exceptional weight puller.  Breeders:  Nancy Russell/Jamie Nelson
So how does she get the nickname "Houdini"?

Crate Number 1--a wire cage by HavaHeart with a plastic tray.  It lasted 48 hours.  By the end of the week, all of the locking mechanisms were blown off the front as was the entire door.  The plastic tray was wrecked after day 1.
Crate number 2--actually, it was a chainlink pen 5' X 5' X 4'.  It fared better.  That lasted most of a week.  She tore up her face, but she found every possible escape route, even when I ran chain around the entire thing (hence the name, Houdini).
Crate number 3--a Midwest crate.  Held her for a long time but she figured out how to tip it over and "superman" out the bottom through a 4" space.  When we made it so she couldn't tip it, she figured out how to undo the latch. From the inside.  She can get out now in mere seconds.
Crate number 4--crate of unknown origin, very flimsy, blew out the back.
Crate number 5--Central Metal crate.  Escaped in less than 48 hours.  Took most of the metal off the front of the crate and blew the front open.
Crate number 6--Airline crate.  Started digging holes in the bottom until she decided to blow the door off.
Crate number 7--the Commander Series by VariKennel.  This one lasted a LONG time--over a year, the record by far.  It's the old fashioned style, pretty much no way out.  But she found it.  We had it welded everywhere but the door.  Yep, you guessed it, she rammed the door open.  And one day we put her in and came home, the door was still closed and locked and the rest of the crate was all still welded at 1" intervals.  Nothing was bent, and there were none of the tell-tale tufts of hair stuck to her point of escape.  No one had been there to let her out.  She sat smiling at us when we came home.

She started on an 8th crate but I pulled her out before she wrecked that one, too....

So that's approximately $450 in crates.  STILL want a Malamute?

Interested in a Malamute?  Do your homework first.  These dogs are really not for everyone. Living with a malamute sometimes means your backyard may look like somebody took a backhoe to it or someone has dug trenches as a war preparation.

They shed, they excavate (only the small puppies dig), they chew, they pull, they counter surf, they don't listen, they vocalize, they sometimes hate other dogs, sometimes kill smalll animals, they challenge your authority, and they are absolutely fantastic escape artists.  They need plenty of exercise to avoid boredom (they'll invent  games you won't like) and to keep them from getting fat.

So WHY would
anyone want one??!!!

They are highly entertaining, extremely intelligent, and a challenge for even the best trainer.  They aren't a pet, they are a companion to be loved and respected.  If you want a dog to sit on command every time and do circus tricks, consider another breed.  The best times I've had with my dogs are backpacking, sledding, and weight pulling.  We do a little showing on the side, too.  They are also great pets in the right home.

When considering a Malamute, sometimes the best way to get into the breed is to get  an adult dog.  There are Malamute Rescues all over the country with adoptable mals just waiting for someone like you.  Or, contact a breeder to see if they have adults for sale.  Most dogs end up in rescue because the owner's situation changes and they cannot keep the dog, others jump in without realizing just what having a large hairy dog entails. Sometimes people buy a new couch and the dog no longer matches--seriously, this happens.  I recommend an adult dog for people who work full-time.
Malamute rescue is overflowing with dogs!
Dog Sledding and Weight Pulls
Dog sledding can be a good activity for you and your dog. It's a blast!!  You don't have to have a whole team to sled.  You can sled with just one or two dogs.  Or, for those not in snowy climates, a bicycle with a skijor attachment will work, or there are some great 3 wheeled rigs available.  They come in many sizes for different sized teams.  I have the lightweight folding Risdon and like it.

Risdon rigs

Weight pulling is a ton of fun and Malamutes do well at it naturally.    If the dog does not want to pull, the dog is not going to pull.  He will sit down and put his ears back (see illustration below), the equivalent to a human sitting down, crossing their arms, and sticking out their bottom lip.  Kita sometimes decides to leave the weight pull area altogether when she's had enough.   Any structurally healthy Mal can weight pull and so can any owner with a lot of patience and a good set of lungs.
So you think you want  a Malamute?
This is Reno.  This is what a Malamute does when it does not want to do something.  This is at a weight pull competition.  Notice the posture.  He is firmly planted on the ground and his ears are back.  While the picture is a bit comical, the seriousness is that the dog has had enough.  The handler only thing a handler can do at this point is vocally try to convince the dog to pull.
One of the stars of this site is affectionately called Kita.  Be sure to check out her buddies on  Beamer's, Bella's, Vinnie's and Ike's pages.  She came to us in spring of 2000 and we've come a long way since then.    She has earned her backpacking and weight pull titles, taken up lurecoursing (sort of), is currently learning agility.  At the 2003 AMCA National Specialty weight pull, she placed 3rd in her weight class. *NEWS* Kita  completed the 2005-2006 AMCW weight pull season with an impressive 5th place in the very competitive 80 and Under class!

This working dog proved herself last year at the 2002 AMCA National specialty where she placed 3rd by one point in the Working Dog Showcase.  The top 4 dogs in the Working Dog Showcase were only separated by one point.
National Specialty 2006, Knoxville TN.  Kita turned 8 recently and is stepping out in the Veteran's class.  She's moving better than ever and having a lot of fun doing it!  She's sometimes having, well, a little TOO much fun bouncing around and being goofy but she's still a joy to show!
