As with all forms of exercise, you should consult a doctor before starting a yoga routine.

What is yoga?

Many people think yoga is some sort of weird space-case, pretzle-people ritual. The truth is that yoga can be practiced for many different reasons. Some (like me) use yoga as an exercise tool. Others perform yoga as a meditation ritual or as a philosophy. No matter why it is performed, yoga includes gentle stretching, breathing exercises, and progressive relaxation. I find it to be very soothing and invigorating.

What are the benefits of yoga?

The benefits are numerous. It is an excellent low impact exercise for improving flexibility and light muscle toning. In addition, it is an excellent way to relax, reduce stress, and focus your mind. I also find that it helps me sleep better. One of the most wondeful things about yoga is that it is appropriate for nearly everyone. Pregnant women, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses can enjoy yoga.

Don't you need to be really flexible and in shape to do yoga?

No. Yoga is very adaptable to the needs and abilities of the individual. You begin where and how your abilities are best suited. In fact, the whole point of yoga is the process of doing it. Of course, many people grow more flexible as they do yoga.

How can I learn more about yoga?

There are many ways to learn more about yoga. A good place to learn basic information about yoga is at the American Yoga Association web site. To learn about the poses or asanas of yoga, follow this link. There are also a variety of books on yoga that are commonly available.

I have created a page on herbal, folk and home remedies. Follow this link to check it out.
