Born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, Gloria Steinem had a rough upbringing. As a child she had an unstable home life and because of constant travelling, didn’t attend school regularly until the age of ten. Her mother, a certified teacher, tutored her.
Unfortunately at the age of 10, Gloria’s mother became ill, and with her sister at college and father at work, Gloria took on the responsibility and role of mother. She cared for her mother, shopped, cooked, and cleaned the house, in addition to attending school.  During these extreme years, Gloria’s escape was through reading and movies.  She especially liked Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and her favourite movies were Shirley Temple orphan stories.
