The Police said yesterday that they were looking for a 37-year-old hospital employee from Queens who claims he planted a fake bomb device aimed at John Gotti outside a Little Italy social club.
The suspect, Michael McCray, called WCBS-TV in New York saying he was waging war against drugs and claiming responsibility for leaving the device, said Barbara Nevins, a correspondent at the station.
On Monday, a plastic box containing salt and gunpowder was found after an anonymous caller told the police that a "gift" for Mr. Gotti had been left at the Ravenite Social Club at 247 Mulberry Street, where the police suspect that Mr. Gotti conducts mob business. Investigators have identified Mr. Gotti as the Head of the Gambino crime family.
Ms. Nevins said she met Mr. McCray Wednesday at the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport- where he stopped while driving west- a day after he called the television station, which reported the story Friday.
Police consider Mr. McCray a suspect and are "seeking to locate him" for questioning. Sgt. Maurice Howard, a police spokesman, said yesterday.
Mr. McCray is a medical photographer at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, L.I., and lives in Fresh Meadows, Queens, a spokesman for the hospital, Dan Rosett, said.
