The Power of Lightning - The 1998 101 Boyz

It was the closest finish in league history, and when it was over the 101 Boyz emerged on top as the 1998 Champions.  With the top two teams at 11-5-1, the total point tiebreaker had to be used for the first time, and the 101 Boyz beat the Israelites by a mere 14 points.  QB Randall Cunningham, picked up to replace the injured Brad Johnson, was the main weapon for the Boyz, scoring 218 points in just 12 games.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 1998:

  • WR Randy Moss (Dunces), the #1 pick in the draft, was the top WR with 187 points and was named 1998 Rookie of the Year.
  • QB Steve Young (Rebels), the original #1 pick in 1995, was the top QB with 268 points and runner-up in the MVP race.
  • RB Terrell Davis (War Mongers) was the 1998 MVP and top RB with a league record 278 points and a 173.2 MVP rating.
  • Week 14 saw the greatest shoot-out in league history, as the Vipers edged the Zeppelins 116-115.
  • QB Randall Cunningham (101 Boyz) topped 40 points twice in the same year.
LOWLIGHTS FROM 1998:
  • In Week 17 the Vipers scored 4 points, the lowest weekly total in league history.
  • RB Barry Sanders (Sea Birds), the 1997 MVP with 244 points, failed to reach 100 points for the first time in his career.  He finished with 89 points.
  • QB Kordell Stewer (Idiots) scored (-9) points in the final month to drop to 60 on the season.  Last year he was the top QB with 204 points.
  • The Israelites had a two game lead going into Week 13, but then went 1-3-1 down the stretch to finish in second place.
