KILLER BORING

The Mean Machine's Wednesday night victories were brought to you by the number 4 and
the letter "Z."

Four as in the number of innings it took their bats to wake up in Game 2.... And "Z"
as in Zzzzzzzzzzzz.....

The first-place Machine played largely uninspired but well enough to beat the winless
Killers, 15-4 and 13-9.

"Winning ugly sure is pretty," said Team Captain Jon Magnuson, whose single in Game
One was career hit #190 --- a franchise record, overtaking Sluggin' Jim Currigan.

Mark Hiland provided the lone spark for the M.M.s, going 7-8 with 8 RBIs.

BAD HEALTH VS. FIRST HEALTH

The Mean Machine hopes to stretch its unbeaten streak to ten on Wednesday night,
facing 2-6 First Health, whose 2 wins came against the 0-8 Killers.

The banged-up Machine will have to win without three key weapons: Mark Hiland (out -
European All-Stars), Jon Magnuson (out - teaching job) and Josh Kelman (doubtful -
sore from working out).

Together, the threesome have a .408 average.

Right-center fielder Grant Conway needs just 2 hits to become the 4th member of the
150-hit club.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:20 p.m.

HEALTHY 'DOS' OF WINS

The Mean Machine went to 10-0 for the first time on Wednesday night with a sweep of
First Health, 10-5 and 14-2 (5). The nightcap marked the first "mercy rule" victory
of the season for the first-place Machine.

The wins reduced the Machinists magic number to three, pending official results from
Wednesday's action.
Without two of its biggest weapons out, the second game marked the strongest defensive
effort of the season.

The team completed three 1-2-3 innings behind pitcher Rodney Grayson.

Grant Conway joined the 150-hit club and knocked in four runs in Game Two and Marc
Goldberg went 5 for 7 (both games) to pace the Machine.

DAWG FIGHT FOR FIRST

The Mean Machine looks to complete its first undefeated regular season against the 2nd
place DJ Dawgs on Wednesday.

For Men's American B fans, the schedule could not have made for a more dramatic finish
--- the Machine needs to win at least one game to clinch first place.

First pitch is schedule for 6:20 p.m.

FROM CHUMPS TO CHAMPS

Long the doormats of Men's American B, the Mean Machine lived up to its notorious "We
Know How To Lose" reputation in Wednesday's first game against the DJ Dawgs.

Then, with the Division title on the line, they played their best game of the year.

The defense was the real star of the nightcap; the boys allowed just 3 runs, including
four goose-eggs to close the game.

Usually erratic Tom Pelsnik found his groove at shortstop and clinched the team's
batting title as the Machine rolled to a franchise-record 13th victory, 15-3.

In the opener, the Machinists squandered a 6-1 lead with its worst defensive inning of
the year, a 10-run onslaught that had the Dawgs barking about a subsequent
championship game. The 16-7 loss ruined the M.M.'s perfect season .

A TIME TO KILL

The Mean Machine begins its quest for a second championship this Wednesday night at El
Dorado Park's North Field.

"We need to establish our dominance early and demolish the Killers to set the tone for
the rest of the evening," said Team Captain Jon Magnuson, who was preparing himself
for the game by fumbling through box scores from Sunday's NFL action.

As expected, the team will face those loveable losers, the overachieving Killers.

First pitch is 6:20 p.m. The team will arrive at the field at 6 p.m. --- fans should
get there no later than 6:20 p.m. to ensure quality seats.

DAWG GONE IT

Adolescent boys everywhere aren't talking baseball when they mention "getting to third
base." They long to "stretch a double into a triple."

Turns out, grown men think along the same lines; even on the softball diamond.

David Hughes was tagged out at third base with two outs in the seventh inning, ending
the Mean Machine's season an inning short of its second league championship.

The boys had won the first two games of the playoffs in exciting fashion, 10-9 (8)
over the Killers and 20-17 vs. the Arabian Goggles.

Facing the DJ Dawgs, the only team to beat the Machine during the regular season, the
Machinists raced ahead to an 11-6 advantage.

But solid hitting by the DJD and a controversial (in other words, "obvious" to a
normal human being) call on a 2-out infield hit spelled doom for the Machine. Those
in attendance who actually have a soul clearly saw Rick Strouse's throw beat the
runner.

Bright spots for the team included Tom Pelsnik's jaw dropping defense and Brett
Bacchus's hitting tear --- B.B. was 7 for 8 in the final two contests.

The team also finished with its best overall record ever, 15 and 2.

AUTUMN TRAINING

At least two members of the Mean Machine are mad as hell about their seconnd place finish --- and they're swinging the Wiffle to prove it.

In plastic-baseball-like action over the weekend, Jon Magnuson defeated Erin Bryant 12-10 and then beat both E.B. and Chris Carlock 12-8-5 at Santa Monica Pier.

E-B-P-O was purely P-O'd in the first game --- at one point, he had a ten to zero lead.

In the nightcap, Carlock failed to utilize his access to the video library of Magnuson's at-bats --- allowing three homeruns on three straight pitches.
