Chapter 14 They got up that morning and shared a shower. They went into the kitchen and Sky started breakfast. "Deja vu.", Matt said as he and Josie entered the kitchen. They all laughed. Just as Sky was putting the last plate on the table, Jeff’s cell phone rang. He looked a little uneasy as he answered it, "Hello?……I can’t talk to you right now………I’ll call you later…………you too……..bye", he said into the phone. He hung up. He and Matt shared an awkward glance, but Sky pretended not to notice. They finished breakfast and the girls saw them off. They were headed home, to North Carolina. The Next Day Sky had just come in from a swim and decided to call Jeff. She couldn’t get him off of her mind and she just wanted to hear his voice. So, she picked up the phone and called his cell since she didn’t have his home number. She had butterflies in her stomach like a school girl as she anticipated hearing his sexy voice answer the phone. She was left dumbfounded as she heard a girl’s voice on the other end of the line: "Hello?" "Amy?" "No, this is Kristin." "Oh, I’m sorry. Is, um, Jeff there?" "No, he went over to his Dad’s. Can I take a message?" Sky stumbled for words to say. "Yeah, um….no, that’s okay, I’ll just call back later." "Well, can I at least tell him who called?" Sky was becoming irritated by her nosiness. "Yeah, as a matter of fact, tell him Sky called." "Sky? I don’t think I know you. Who are you?" "Just tell him, he knows." And she hung up. "Let it go, Sky.", she said to herself, "don’t jump to any conclusions." She was still standing by the phone when Josie walked into the house from the backyard. She could see that Sky was lost in a daze of confusing thought. "What’s up?", Josie asked. "Nothing……probably nothing.", Sky said snapping out of her thoughts. "Well, what’s probably nothing?", Josie asked. Sky told her about what had just happened. "I’ll get to the bottom of this.", Josie said as she picked up the phone and dialed Matt’s number. "Josie, what are you doing? I told you it was nothing.", Sky begged her sister to hang up the phone. Matt answered and Josie waved her hand at Sky as if to say, ‘Shut up!’ "Hello?" "Well, hello there, Mr. Sexy Man." "Hey, Josie. What’s up?" "Who’s Kristin?" Matt was silent for a moment. "What?" "Who’s Kristin?" "Why do you ask that?" "Just tell me who she is." Sky wasn’t talking harshly to him. She was actually laughing slightly as she drilled him for details, as if it were no big deal. "I think you should leave this one alone." "Oh…..but you know how nosy I am. I just gotta know." "Josie, I said leave it alone." His voice grew more firm with each word. "Now, Matt, are you hiding something?" "Why are you asking me anyway?" "Well, Sky just tried to call Jeff, but Kristin answered instead." Matt put his hand over the phone and turned to Jeff, "Sky just talked to Kristin. Bro, you better call her. Both of them." "SHIT!!!", Jeff said as he jumped up and jerked the receiver up from the phone. "What was that all about?" "Let’s just stay out of this one. So, how was your day?" "Oh no you don’t. Tell me." "I said…How was your day?" Josie shrugged her shoulders at Sky as she gave up her quest for the answer. She turned and took the cordless phone to her room to finish her conversation with Matt. Just as she shut the door, Sky’s cell phone rang. "I didn’t know I left that on.", she said as she picked it up, "Hello?" "Look, Sky, I can explain." "Explain what?" "Kristin." Sky could tell what was about to happen by the panic in Jeff’s voice. She started to get a sickening feeling in the pit of her stomach. "What about her?’ "She’s my girlfriend. Well, she was my girlfriend. I guess technically she still is…………..", he continued rambling. Sky didn’t hear anymore of what he said, only the hundreds of thoughts that were running through her mind, ‘I’ve been used. I thought he was different. I guess none of them are. That’s okay, suck it up. Pretend it doesn’t bother you. Pretend that it was nothing more than a fling for you.’ "Sky?……are you still there?" "huh, oh yeah, I’m here." "Say something, yell at me, anything. Don’t just sit there, that kills me." "What do you want me to say? That I’m suprised, that I’m hurt? Why would I be?" Jeff sat silent as she continued. "Jeff, it’s okay. It’s not like we fell in love or anything. We had a good time, a little fling is all. Now it’s over and you’re back home with your girl, where you should be. No problem." "But it’s not like that. And you know it. It was more than a fling." "Well, I’m sorry you thought that. But that’s all it was to me. Thanks for the memories. Maybe I’ll see you around sometime. Bye." "Sky!!! Don’t hang up!!! Sky!!!", she heard him say as she pushed the ‘end’ button. What an appropriate name for that little button on the phone. "Thanks for the memories?", she said starting to laugh at how stupid that sounded. But then her laughter turned to tears as she realized that she had let him go. She took her cell phone and hurled it with all of her might against the back door. It shattered into a thousand pieces as she yelled, "DAMNIT!!!" Josie came out of her room to see what the racket was about. She was still talking to Matt. "I’ll call you back", she told him as she saw the anger on her sister’s face, "Sky, what is it?" "Nothing, Josie. It’s absolutely nothing.", Sky said as she threw her hand up at Josie and walked back out to the pool. Last Chapter ..*.. Next Chapter ..*.. Chapter Index ..*.. Home |
