Chapter 12

Sky slid a bottle of Gatorade and a pack of Tylenol onto the counter.  "Rough night?", the clerk asked, smiling at her.  "Yeah.", she mumbled.  She paid for the items and headed back out to her car.  She threw three of the pills into her mouth and took a big gulp of the drink.  "Damnit!", she said to herself as she realized that she had to go back and pick up her sister.  "You can do this.", she said to herself as she pulled out of the parking lot and headed back towards the hotel.  She picked up her cell phone and called Josie’s.  She was suprised that Matt answered.
   "Hello?"
   "Let me talk to Josie"
   "You okay, Doc?"
"I’m fine.  Let me talk to Josie."
   "Okay"
He handed her the phone.  "Hello?"
"Meet me in the parking lot in 15 minutes.  We’re going home."
   "Where are you?"
   "Just do it."
   "Okay.  Bye."
Sky pulled up in the parking place and waited for her sister.  She was staring out her window as the door opened.  Josie didn’t say a word and Sky didn’t turn around as she reached for the gear shift.  She felt a hand on hers and turned around in shock.  It wasn’t Josie, it was Jeff.  He stared at her with pleading eyes, "Sky, I’m sorry.  Can’t we talk about this?"  She sat silent for a moment, then turned to look him in the eyes, "What is there to say?"  "I don’t know.", he said, "But I know I can’t let it end like this.", he said.  "What we did was stupid.", she said as she saw the hurt on his face, "Wait…that’s not what I meant."  "Then what did you mean?", he asked the emotion showing in his eyes.  "We didn’t even use any protection for crying out loud.", she said almost yelling.  "I know.  And we should have, but I don’t have any diseases.", he said.  "Well, fine, but how do you know that I don’t?", she asked with anger.  "Well, do you?", he asked with sarcasm.  "No…..but that’s not the point.", she said trying to make her case, "You didn’t know that."  "Look, we were drunk.  I don’t remember anything and neither do you.  Yeah, we should have used something, but we didn’t. There’s nothing we can do to change these facts.  The only thing we can do is put it behind us and move on.", he said.  Sky turned to stare out the window again.  He put his hand on her face and gently turned her to look at him, "Is it what we did that bothers you so bad, or the way it happened?"  "The way it happened.", she said melting in his stare.  "Okay.  Then let’s forget that it happened at all.  For all I know, I was drunk as hell, stripped my clothes off and fell asleep.", he said starting to smile.  "Yeah, that’s the way I remember it too.", she said starting to laugh.  He leaned over and kissed her very passionately.  "Are we okay now?", he asked.  "I think we will be.", she said smiling.  "Good.  Let’s get something to eat.  I’m starving.", he said as he opened the door.  She smiled to herself as she got out of the car.  ‘Why can’t I just let him go?", she thought to herself as he wrapped his arm around her and they headed back into the hotel.
