Poem Review by Andrew Angus Title of Poem: Love & Tears Source: Voices of the Heart (2004) Author: Jerry W. Bradford Rating: 3.8 laurels over 5 laurels Jerry's poem "Love & Tears" is a rhymed poem with the pattern ABAB, ABAB, ABAB, ABAB. It has four stanzas with four lines for each stanza. This poem reminds me of a romance greeting card. The rhyming is excellent. The meter is not well-disciplined. The poem begins like this... "I've hurt the heart of the one I love A deed that has brought me shame The gift sent down from god above Beauty is her name" What is the "deed that has brought me shame"? The poet does not say. The poet compares the tears of the female character to a rain. The female must be crying so hard. "Her tears have sent the rain to my heart My love, I never meant you harm I feared this would happen from the start I fell for your beauty and charm" What does the male character mean when he said in the poetic line- "My love, I never meant you harm". The poet does not say how or in what way did the male persona hurt the female character. What was the fault of the male character that caused the female persona to be so hurt and cry like rain? Is the male persona breaking up with the female persona and so the female was hurt? Is the male persona leaving the female for a certain period of time and so the female was hurt? What does the male character mean by the words- "I feared this would happen from the start...". Is he referring to the breaking up or pregnancy? He knows from the start that there will be a break up or pregnancy? The male character blames "Fate" for the event of their dramatic break-up in the poetic lines- "I'd wipe your tears and kiss your lips If fate were not cruel, but kind I can feel you close at my fingertips But your body I hold in my mind" Is the guy in love with the lady or in lust with body of the lady as the poetic line say- "But your body I hold in my mind". The poem is a very emotional poem. The poem ends like this: "I know you love with your heart of gold You know I love you too Without your love, my heart is cold The truth is I'm in love with you" If the guy loves the lady, why is the lady crying like a rain? There is a possibility the guy is leaving the lady for some good reason. It could be a military duty? Is it due to a first girlfriend? If the guy still loves the lady, what prevents him from staying with the lady? |

Love & Tears by Jerry W. Bradford Source: Voices of the Heart, (2004), p. 70 I've hurt the heart of the one I love A deed that has brought me shame The gift sent down from god above Beauty is her name Her tears have sent the rain to my heart My love, I never meant you harm I feared this would happen from the start I fell for your beauty and charm I'd wipe your tears and kiss your lips If fate were not cruel, but kind I can feel you close at my fingertips But your body I hold in my mind I know you love with your heart of gold You know I love you too Without your love, my heart is cold The truth is I'm in love with you ---------------------------------- An Awesome Love by Jerry W. Bradford Source: Voices of the Heart (2004), p.20 What have you done? What change has taken place? Something wonderful has begun It started when I saw your face I never knew I could feel like this Never thought I could love so much Or sit and wait for just one kiss Or pray to god that someday we would touch Yet each day, I thank god that you live I'm happy just because you are near The things I need are the things you give I've found all I need right here With just a smile you brighten each day My love for you, it grows stronger I love you so much, I don't know what else to say Except that I'll love you forever or longer ------------------------------------------------- (Copyright (c) 2004 by Jerry W.
