A few of us met with Lorenzo in the main stage tonight to do "table work" on scenes.
Lorenzo helped us to explore and understand each of our characters, talked about their motivations, what drives each of the characters to do what they do.
I figured my character as the manservant was probably in Cervantes' employ since he was a teenager or so. Cervantes is his master, his teacher, his protector, his employer, but also his friend. Perhaps the manservant even thinks of him as a peer! I mentioned that the manservant is so accustomed to Cervantes, that I feel he has a good sense of what Cervantes is thinking, and has the ability to assess what his needs are, almost to be pre-cognitive! That is what makes the manservant exercise his role as "stage manager" very fluidly. We also talked about how the manservant's hunger for learning, perhaps a potential newfound vocation in the theatre, is one of the driving forces behind their relationship.
Lorenzo thought it would also be neat to maybe explore exactly when I'm the manservant and when I'm Sancho Panza and perhaps even let the manservant come through every now and then through Sancho.... |
