Tonight we worked on "To each his Dulcinea" which quite possibly might be ending our Act I. The show, however, was written to be performed without an intermission, but the production/artistic staff of WS is obviously thinking otherwise. When asked for a reason of why an intermission is being placed in the show, Lorenzo answered with a smile and with a twinkle in his eye: "Brownies, Babe. It's all about the Brownies!" At first I felt that an intermission would destroy the rhythm and flow of the show, its continuity. However, after staging "To Each His Dulcinea", I can easily see it now as a good "cliffhanger" until the beginning of Act II. I think it will also afford my character another good connection with Quixote as I explore Sancho's own "Dream." Well, we'll see... We also worked the "Barber scene/Golden Helmet of Mambrino" number. We ended the evening working the "missive" scene with me and Sarah (Aldonza). |

Today started with Lorenzo doing some character work-- or "Tablework" as Paul calls it. My challenges are to let go of any "rote business" from my prior production and try to explore my character from scratch, opening myself to what the cast has to offer. One of the things I know I am not used to doing is performing for the audience that is on stage (i.e. the prisoners). Lorenzo also suggested using my regular voice to help find the center of my character. |
Today started with fight choreography. Mayol is our fight master and Justin is the designated Fight Captain, although Mayol mentioned he would like us all to act as Fight Captains, to ensure safety. Mayol also explained and described the fight scene between Quixote and friends versus the Muleteers ("Aaaand in THIS corner, we have....!"). Mayol also mentioned that we might have a couple break-away barrels --how fun! And,by the way that Jaimie and Justin cracked their whips, you just KNOW this'll be a GREAT fight!!!! :-D After the break we went through reviewing just a couple more scenes and transitions. We then did our first "stumble through" of Act I. Lorenzo said we did it in about an hour and 5 minutes. I decide to take Lorenzo's tip from the day before and not do my "Sancho Voice" to help me ground my character and search for that "specificity" in my lines and actions. I must say it sure felt good as an actor to be doing something new with this. Paul even commented on how he feels it is helping me. Lorenzo also commented on it and liked that I was opening up my "Missive/I Like Him" scene to the prisoner "audience" on stage. He also said he would like me to have a carrot - something to wave around, use as a pretend sword etc. Should be fun! |
