I recommend the two volume Blue Note the Album Cover Art published by Chronicle Books. These table size books contain well photographed images of classic album covers, featuring Reid Miles designs and Francis Wolff's photography. Together they captured the spirit of the amazing music being recorded by Blue Note in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Album covers are the ultimate advertisement for music - enticing you to venture into a new world of sound. Reid Miles used his advertising skills to transport jazz fans into the music through the album cover. He often used simple designs of bright colors and clear type mixed with cropped black and white photos, giving you a feeling of every Blue Note album before you listen to it. Other designers have tried to copy their work, but the original covers stand the test of time and often I like them as much as the music they advertise. They are so much fun to look at.
