More Than That

Chapter 6 - The Dream
“Woa. Where am I?” Asked Arlet. She looked around. Her surroundings were completely unfamiliar to her.

The vast ocean spread endlessly in front of her and the moon, in a perfect crescent hung right above her as a countless number of stars burned around it. She looked down at her feet and saw they were slightly buried in the white sand. Looking to her left and right, she saw that the sand stretched eternally in both directions. The sound of small waves rolling onto the sand was the only thing that could be heard for miles. Arlet looked down at her clothes and she chuckled slightly; she was still in her Avalanche pajamas.

“Arlet?” Came a voice behind her suddenly.

She swung around. “Nick?”

“Where are we?” He asked. He looked just as confused as she did.

“I have no idea.”

There was an awkward pause between them. They looked around uncomfortably and kicked sand mindlessly.

“So...”

“Yeah...”

“Uh...do you want to take a walk or something?” Nick asked nervously.

“Sure. Why not?” Arlet replied.

Nick gave a small smile as he walked next to her. The two of them walked down the endless beach together.

“Wow. This place is so beautiful. I’ve never been any place this...perfect.” Arlet said quietly, looking at the ground.

“It is gorgeous. I wonder where we are. I’ve never seen a place like this in Florida before.”

“I wonder why we’re here.”

“Must be dreaming.”

“I guess so. Weird, isn’t?”

“Yeah, it sure is.”

They both chuckled.

“Nice PJ’s.” Nick said with a small grin.

Arlet felt her cheeks getting warm. “Thanks...I like yours too.”

He was wearing multi-colored spotted boxers and a white t-shirt. Nick smiled.

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. Anyways, it’s funny that we dreamt about the same place.”

“Yep. I’ve never had a dream like this before. It’s kind of weird.”

“That’s for sure.”

The two smiled at each other once more as they continued to walk down the beach. They were both quiet as Nick walked with his arms hanging down his sides and Arlet with her arms tightly crossed over her chest and her shoulders slightly up.

“Hey, let’s sit. I want to look at the ocean.” Arlet suggested.

“Sure.”

The two of them sat down on the sand and looked out over the ocean. The moon reflected off the water and the stars glistened even brighter. They sat there, side-by-side, in complete silence for a few minutes until Nick broke the silence.

“So uh...you’re planning on coming to visit me, right?”

“Of course. I’m ready to go on vacation. I can’t wait to come down.” Arlet replied without taking her eyes off the ocean.

“Good. I can’t wait for you to come down.”

“Me too.” She looked at him. “I’ve been wanting to spend some time with you. You know, to get to know you a little bit better. Get to know Nick Carter, my best friend and not Nick Carter the Backstreet Boy that I see on TV or hear on the radio.”

“Yeah, me too. To tell you the truth, that’s all I’ve been talking about for months to the guys. I think they’re sick and tired of me talking about you. Brian and Leighanne want to meet you though. They can’t wait for you to come down.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. They’re staying with me also. They’re staying for another week or so. I’m actually not quite sure when they’re leaving. Oh well.”

“Yeah, I’ve been talking to Sarah and Chris about me coming down also. I think they’re tired of me talking about it too.”

They both laughed as they looked out onto the ocean. The two sighed together and started to pick at the sand.

“Arlet, look at me.” Nick said suddenly.

Arlet, taken back at this sudden statement, looked at him. “What?” She asked.

“I want you tell me something. And I want you to be completely honest.”

“Ok. What do you want me to tell you?”

“Look into my eyes. What do you see?” He asked quietly.

Arlet gave him a weird look first before looking into his eyes. As soon as her eyes looked into his, she lost her breath. She remembered being a teenager and looking into those eyes from pictures and getting her breath caught in her throat. And now, here she is, really looking into them. Those gorgeous blue eyes always made her melt and made her think that no one else had eyes like that. And there wasn’t.

Looking into his eyes, Arlet saw them flicker. There was definitely something there but Arlet didn’t know what it was. She looked in harder. Then, she saw a man with drive and ambition. A man who cared about everyone around him. A man who loved life so much. She saw a...man. A man who was completely normal like everyone else but knew how to sing and dance. But what was the flicker from, she asked herself as she tried to look in deeper. But then she saw it. No, it can’t be, she told herself. She tore her eyes away from his and looked again into the ocean.

“What?” He asked trying to get her eyes again but she tried to prevent it. “What’s wrong? What did you see?”

Arlet continued to keep her eyes away from him. No, he can’t. It’s not possible, she continued to tell herself.

“Arlet,” Nick said softly. “What did you see? Please look at me.” He placed his hand on her chin and made her look at him.

She closed her eyes. “I saw...” she started in a small voice.

“You saw...”

“No, I didn’t see it. Forget it. I didn’t see anything.” She said quickly opening her eyes. Nick’s eyes were full of concern.

“What? You saw something. Tell me.” He said gently. His fingers were still on her chin.

She didn’t answer him. Their eyes locked once again and she was lost in them once more. Arlet could feel her heart start to beat faster and her breathing started to become short and rapid.

Very slowly, Nick started to lean in...
