More Than That

Chapter 7 - In Love? No way! (Part 2)
When Nick hung up the phone, he didn’t move. He just stared at the phone.

“Yo Nick, AJ’s not coming over.” Brian said, looking at his best friend. “Why did you tell her that?”

Nick didn’t answer him. He continued to just stare at the silent phone in front of him. He didn’t want to talk about the dream again. He told Brain and Leighanne earlier that day of his strange dream. He wasn’t surprised when they both said he was falling in love with Arlet, with funny grins across their faces.

“Nick,” Leighanne started slowly. “Why didn’t you talk to her about the dream? You told us that’s the reason you were going to call her.”

“Because I’m not in love with her. There is no possible way.” He answered her. “There was nothing to discuss.” He sighed in deeply and turned to the kitchen table Brian and Leigh were sitting at. Both looked at him, deeply concerned. He shot them a weak smile.

“Nick, I know you didn’t want to hear us tell you that you are in love with her but you have got to face the facts. Looks at the evidence. One: You talk about her twenty-four, seven. I don’t think there has been a day that has gone by where you haven’t mentioned something about her ever since the two of you met.” Brian told him. He glanced at his wife who looked at him.

“Secondly, I don’t want to say this but...” Brian started, slightly embarrassed. “Well uh...we could hear you talking in your sleep.” He finished, not able to look at Nick.

Nick looked at his best friend, surprised. “Really?”

Brian nodded. “You sound like you’re talking to her.”

“Wow. What do I say?”

Brian and Leighanne looked at each other. “Do you really want to know?” Leighanne asked. Nick nodded. “Well, you say things like ‘I’m so glad I’ve found someone like you’ and ‘Always stay here with me’ and ‘You’ll be in my heart for as long as I live and longer’ and...” Leighanne paused. Nick looked at her with his eyes that shouted for her to keep going, even though he was completely silent. “...‘I love you.’”

Nick blinked. He had no idea he talked in his sleep. “Oh...” was all he could say.

Leighanne and Brian also didn’t know what to say. They just watched him carefully.

“But, I can’t.” Nick told them slowly. “I can’t be in love with her. She’s my best friend. That’s all. Nothing more. Just friends. In love?  No way!” Nick finished light-heartedly.

“Best friend make the best partners in relationships.” Brian said to him.

“Yeah, that may be true but not in this case. I’ve never had a girl for a best friend before. This is a new change for once and I want to keep it that way.”

“Okay, if you say so. Well, whatever you decided, we’ll support you all the way.”

Nick smiled. “Thanks bro. Anyways, Arlet said she’s thinking of flying down here this Sunday.”

“Oh good! We’re still here.” Leighanne said.

“When are you guys planning on going back home?”

“What? Do you not want us here, Nick? Is that it?” Brian teased.

Nick laughed. “No! I was just wondering.”

“Oh, yeah, sure you are.”

“Well, to tell you the truth, we’re not sure. We’ll probably leave when Arlet does.” Leighanne answered.

“For that long?” They nodded. “Oh okay then. Where are your dogs?”

“They’re sleeping in our room. Bri’s been playing with them all morning.”

“You know, that sounds like a good idea. I’m gonna go upstairs and take a nap. Are you guys gonna be alright?” Nick asked.

“Yeah, I think we could manage.”

“OK, I’ll see you guys later.” Nick smiled once more before getting up from the table. Brian and Leigh watched him exit the kitchen.

“He’s so in love with her.” Brian said, grinning.

“I heard that!” Came Nick’s voice from the other room.
