More Than That

Chapter 8 - Having Fun In The Sun (Part 1)
Nick scrambled around his house, trying to find his keys and wallet. He was running late, as usual, and he needed to get to the airport in time to pick Arlet up.

“Key, keys! Where are my fuckin’ keys?!” He asked angrily to no one. Brian and Leighanne decided to spend the day with AJ and Amanda. “Ah ha! There you are!” He said triumphantly when he found them between the cushions of his couch. Nick stood up, stuffed his wallet in his back pocket and ran out the door.

The warm, summer, Florida air he loved for so long hit him in the face as he locked his front door. He could smell the sweet ocean behind his house and smiled to himself. He jumped in his car, a new 2002, dark green, Jeep Wrangler and started it up. He drove past his iron, security gate and sped to the airport.

After about twenty to thirty minutes flew by, Nick halted his Jeep in a parking space in the airport parking lot  and flew out of his car. Quickly putting on his hat and glasses, he ran into the airport. He mumbled to himself as he kept checking his watch as he went through the grueling airport security, hoping Arlet’s flight was late.

After fifteen minutes of security procedures, Nick finally made it to Arlet’s gate. He blew a sigh of relief when he noticed the plane was late. He grabbed a seat near the ticket desk and waited. A few minutes later, Nick saw the huge commercial plane approaching it’s destination. The plane came to a complete stop and Nick knew Arlet would be stepping off soon.

He started to feel nervous and he didn’t know why. Yeah, he hadn’t seen her for a few months but that shouldn’t be the reason. Arlet was his best friend. There was no reason why he should feel nervous.

Nick spaced off thinking about it as Arlet walked off the plane. The unfamiliar weather hit Arlet as soon as she stepped foot in the airport. She felt warm wearing her Ville Nieminen jersey but Arlet couldn’t help but brag to the world who her favorite team was. Even though she wasn’t used to Florida’s weather, she smiled at the change as she looked around for Nick.

The thought of him made her stomach do flip-flops. She couldn’t shake off the feeling. She kept going back to what Sarah told her. Arlet shook her head as if to shake the idea out of her. But in the very back of her mind, she knew it was still there and that she would be thinking about it that night before she went to bed.

Arlet’s eyes searched the many faces around her for Nick’s. She noticed him by the ticket desk, looking like he spaced out. She giggled and carried her carry-on towards him.

“Hey! Long time, no see!” She said when she approached him.

Nick slightly jumped. He didn’t noticed she was there. He looked at her and a huge, broad smile broke out on his face.

“Hey Babydoll! Come here and give me a hug!” He said opening his arms to her.

Arlet set her bag down and stepped into his welcoming arms. The two embraced each other tightly. Both of them didn’t want to let go for some reason. They fit perfectly in each others arms and it felt good to them. They both realized what was happening given that they pulled away from each other rather quickly.

“Well uh...let’s go get the rest of your stuff.” Nick said, rather quickly.

“Yeah, the rest of my stuff.”

The two of them walked over to the baggage claim and got Arlet’s stuff. None of them really said anything to each other until they got to Nick’s car.

“Woa! Is this yours?” Arlet asked in awe.

“Yeah. You like it? It’s my new baby, a 2002 Jeep Wrangler.” Nick responded proudly.

“I know. I love Jeeps. I have a ‘94 myself. I love it to death. Can I drive it?”

Nick gave her a nervous look. “I don’t know. I bought it before it before we left for the tour. I haven’t driven it much.”

“Oh please, Nick? Please? I’ll be careful. I have one myself and I drive it more than my beamer.” Arlet pleaded.

“You have a beamer? Man, if I had a BMW, I would drive it all the time!”

“Then why didn’t you get one?”

“I don’t know actually.” Replied Nick, thoughtfully.

They both chuckled. “So, please? Can I just please drive it?”

“But you don’t know where my house is.”

“True but you can tell me where to go.”

Nick sighed in defeat. “Oh okay. You can drive.”

“I love you!” She exclaimed grabbing the keys and then throwing her bags into the back. Nick got in the passenger seat.

“You can drive stick, right?” Nick asked her.

“Nick, Jeeps used to only be manual before the newer models came out. I have a ‘94. I think I know how to drive stick.” Arlet informed him.

“Okay, just making sure.” Nick replied, slightly embarrassed. “Just be careful, okay?”

“Don’t worry! I won’t drive too fast and get us a ticket or something. Relax!” She assured him.

She started the car, put it in reverse, slowly backed out of the parking space, shifted to first gear and sat her foot on the gas pedal.

“Jesus Christ!” Nick yelped, looking for something to hold on to.
